The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) is set to take runners on a new journey through the heart of Singapore, showcasing iconic landmarks and revamped routes. Scheduled from 29 November to 1 December, this year’s event promises a fresh experience for participants and spectators alike, with nearly 35,000 runners already registered globally.
A Scenic Race Experience
The 2024 edition of SCSM will debut new race routes, with runners passing Singapore’s most renowned landmarks, from the Esplanade and Marina Bay Sands to Gardens by the Bay and the Central Business District (CBD). For the first time, marathon participants will experience the CBD during daylight hours, and Half Marathon runners will once again traverse Gardens by the Bay, a feature not included since 2016.
The races culminate at the historic Anderson Bridge, adding a symbolic touch to the event. Jeff Edwards, Managing Director of Asia for The IRONMAN Group, emphasized the significance of this change, stating, “With the historic Anderson Bridge as our new finish line and updated race routes, this year’s Marathon will showcase the vibrant beauty of Singapore in a new way.”
Rekindling the Ekiden Race with a Cause
One of the most anticipated elements of SCSM 2024 is the re-introduction of the Ekiden race, a relay event where teams of five take turns completing segments of the marathon. This year, corporate teams have a philanthropic opportunity to compete for a cause. Standard Chartered will offer 100 complimentary Ekiden slots for teams that commit to fundraising for Futuremakers, its global youth economic empowerment initiative.
“With the Ekiden race back this year, we are excited to add a philanthropic element for corporates to raise funds for Futuremakers,” said Patrick Lee, CEO, Singapore and ASEAN, Standard Chartered.
In addition to the revamped race routes, the event will see the return of local champions Vanessa Lee and Shaun Goh, winners of the 2023 Half Marathon. Both athletes are eager to defend their titles, with Goh noting his excitement for a rematch with runner-up Jon Lim: “It’s always fun battling with Jon and he’s only gotten stronger over the past year, so I’m very excited for our rematch.
With international participation on the rise, the Singapore Tourism Board and Sport Singapore have highlighted the event as a significant opportunity to showcase the city’s culture and heritage on a global stage. Ong Ling Lee, Executive Director of Sports & Wellness at the Singapore Tourism Board, remarked, “We are proud to support the race, a true embodiment of the sporting spirit, and a showcase of our iconic landmarks.”
