SCSM 2024: Record-Breaking Participation and Performances in 5km and 10km Races

The second day of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) 2024 saw over 20,000 runners hitting the streets for the 5km and 10km categories, with participation surging by 12% and 30% respectively compared to last year. Both races offered runners of all abilities the chance to challenge themselves while soaking in the stunning Singapore cityscape.

The 5km route, ideal for beginners, featured iconic landmarks such as War Memorial Park and the Esplanade, while the 10km course tested over 13,000 runners as they raced past Nicoll Highway, the National Stadium, and Esplanade Bridge before finishing at the historic Anderson Bridge.

In the 10km race, Sanjay Manimaran and Reia Iwade claimed victory in the men’s and women’s categories with impressive times of 32:46 and 37:29. Sanjay’s win marked a back-to-back championship, achieved despite recovering from a thigh injury just a week prior.

“I’m very happy and surprised I was able to come in first. It was tough, but with the help of physio and my coach, I recovered quickly and got back on my feet,” Sanjay said.

Reia added, “The energy was great, running alongside everyone striving to do their best. It was a great race experience overall!”

In the 5km race, Singaporean schoolmates Jonathan Tan and Lakshmikanthan Praveen Kumar secured first and second place in the men’s category with times of 17:51 and 18:41.

Reflecting on his win, Jonathan said, “It’s a great experience to participate in such a race in a fun yet competitive manner. Much thanks to the organisers for setting this up!”

In the women’s category, Tram Anh Nguyen Ngoc claimed victory with a time of 18:35. “Winning my first 5km race at my third SCSM was an incredible experience!” she said, noting the challenge of unexpected elevation changes on the course.

A Vibrant Finish Line Atmosphere

The new finish line at Anderson Bridge buzzed with excitement as family and friends celebrated with runners at the ‘Family and Friends Zone’. Samba dancers, Chinese drummers, and SCSM mascots roamed the post-race area, adding to the festive atmosphere and offering plenty of photo opportunities.

Runners could also redeem $5 food truck vouchers by presenting their Standard Chartered cards, adding a tasty conclusion to their race-day experience.
