You’ve probably seen mentions of MasterClass sprinkled across YouTube and Facebook advertisements with less-than-stellar hooks. However, I ended up trying it because I saw it was 50 percent off, and I’m generally a sucker for learning.
What is MasterClass?
According to MasterClass, it is a “streaming platform that makes it possible for anyone to watch or listen to hundreds of video lessons taught by over 200 of the world’s best.” Here’s my definition: MasterClass is a Netflix-like platform that allows you to learn directly from experts in various fields such as business, wellness, food, arts, writing, and design. Some of the prominent individuals on the platform include Mark Cuban, Kevin Hart, Chris Voss, James Clear, Jay Shetty, Gordon Ramsay, Melinda French Gates, and Bill Nye, among many others.
Mark Cuban’s on it
The reason I mentioned Netflix is because, firstly, I have no reservations in making the comparison, whereas the MasterClass marketing team might hesitate to do so. Secondly, the app’s design is very similar to Netflix. The key selling point is how MasterClass managed to attract so many experts to its platform. I mean, they even have Mark Cuban. This app must be offering something valuable for him to invest his time in it.

Further hone your craft
The course that drew me to subscribing to MasterClass, especially with that 50 percent discount, was by Michael Lewis, the author of Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and Liar’s Poker, to name a few. Writing has been my passion for the longest time, and while many tell me I write amazingly well, I also get my fair share of criticism. Regardless, I strongly believe in deepening my craft to be better this year than the last. So far, I have not regretted listening to Lewis share his insights on crafting a story, and this is me still on his first video at the gym.
Ease of learning
Whether you are a visual learner or an auditory learner, MasterClass caters to both. The best part is that I can let the course run in the background like a podcast. This is extremely handy for me, especially since I do most of my learning while driving and running.
Is Masterclass worth it?
Recommending this can be challenging. As with many new things, it depends on your motivation to buy or subscribe, as well as your habits. If your reason for subscribing is to satisfy a fleeting interest in all things new, then MasterClass is not for you. However, if your reason for subscribing is genuinely to enhance your knowledge, and you already have a set learning routine in your life, then you should give MasterClass a try.
I am not discouraging people from learning, but it is important to be practical. Building a habit is tougher than it sounds. Try establishing one free habit in your life before you start paying for something. Anyway, I digress. To me, MasterClass is worth the cost. For about $10 per month, you can learn and hear from successful individuals who have been there and done that. The return on investment is intangible, but applying what you learn in your work or daily life may result in tangible outcomes.
