OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT group chats to all logged-in users across its Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, following positive early feedback from a regional pilot. The company said the feature will roll out globally on mobile and web “over the coming days” as it continues refining the user experience.
The new tool allows people to collaborate with one another — and with ChatGPT — within the same conversation. OpenAI said the pilot phase began in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, describing it as the first step toward shared chat experiences on the platform.
Collaboration tools for personal and work use
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT group chats are aimed at helping users plan activities, make decisions or work through ideas collectively. They can be used for tasks such as planning a weekend trip, coordinating a group dinner, comparing options, or building shared to-do lists.
For more hands-on projects, such as designing a garden or choosing artwork for a new apartment, users can invite partners or housemates to share preferences and ideas. OpenAI added that the feature also supports workplace and school collaboration, allowing users to exchange articles, notes and questions before ChatGPT helps summarise and organise them.
How the new group chat feature works
Users can start a group chat by tapping the people icon in any new or existing conversation. When someone is added to an existing chat, ChatGPT automatically creates a duplicate as a new group chat to keep private conversations separate.
Group chats can include between one and twenty participants, joined via a shared link. New users must set up a short profile with their name, username and photo for visibility in the chat. A new sidebar section helps users locate their group chats.
Responses in ChatGPT group chats are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which selects the best available model depending on the participants’ subscription tiers. Features such as search, image generation, file uploads and dictation remain enabled. Rate limits apply only to messages from ChatGPT.
OpenAI said it has also added “new social behaviours”, enabling ChatGPT to decide when to respond based on context and to react with emojis. The system can reference profile photos when creating personalised images within the group.
Privacy and youth safeguards
OpenAI said privacy protections are built into ChatGPT group chats. The system does not use a user’s personal ChatGPT memory in group conversations and does not create new memories from those interactions. Users retain control over participation and visibility, and group members — except the creator — can be removed by others.
Additional safeguards apply when users under 18 join a group chat. The platform automatically reduces exposure to sensitive content for all participants, and parental controls allow guardians to disable the feature entirely.
OpenAI views ChatGPT group chats as the foundation for more shared, collaborative experiences on the platform. The company said it will continue gathering user feedback as it explores ways to support decision-making, creativity and teamwork in future updates.
