OpenAI Launched ‘Study Mode’ in ChatGPT to Support Deeper Student Learning

OpenAI has unveiled a new feature in ChatGPT aimed squarely at enhancing the way students learn. Dubbed “Study Mode”, the tool is designed to guide users step-by-step through complex topics, with a focus on deep understanding rather than just arriving at the correct answer.

Available starting today to all logged-in users—including those on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team tiers—Study Mode introduces an educational experience that mimics a 24/7 tutor, powered by advanced AI and shaped by insights from educators and learning scientists. The feature will roll out to ChatGPT Edu users in the coming weeks.

The launch underscores OpenAI’s ambitions to position ChatGPT as more than just a quick answer engine. With millions of students already turning to the platform for help with everything from calculus to computer science, Study Mode is a direct response to concerns that AI might enable shortcuts rather than genuine learning.

“Instead of doing the work for them, study mode encourages students to think critically about their learning,” said Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media. “Features like these are a positive step toward effective AI use for learning.”

From passive answers to active learning

Study Mode leverages a blend of educational strategies—including Socratic questioning, scaffolded responses, and self-reflection prompts—to guide students through concepts at their own pace. Instead of handing out direct answers, the system breaks topics into digestible parts, provides just the right level of context, and encourages students to connect the dots.

Interactive features include:

Socratic-style prompts that encourage critical thinking and exploration; Scaffolded responses to reduce information overload; Personalised support based on the user’s skill level and chat history; Knowledge checks, such as quizzes and open-ended questions with feedback; Flexible toggling, allowing users to switch Study Mode on or off at will.

Built with students, for students

Developed with college students in mind, Study Mode is already being used in real-world academic environments. In early testing, students described the experience as akin to having an “all-knowing” office hours assistant.

“It was like a tutor who doesn’t get tired of my questions,” said college student Maggie Wang. “After a 3-hour working session, I finally understood sinusoidal positional encodings well enough to feel confident.”

Others praised the tool for breaking down dense material into “clear, well-paced explanations.”

A work in progress—and the future of AI in education

OpenAI acknowledges that Study Mode is still an evolving tool. At present, it is powered by custom system instructions—configurations written in collaboration with teachers and pedagogy experts to encourage cognitive engagement and metacognitive reflection. While this allows for rapid iteration, it can also result in occasional inconsistencies.

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to embed this behaviour directly into its core models, informed by feedback from students and educators. Upcoming features could include improved visualisations for complex concepts, goal-setting tools, and more robust progress tracking.

OpenAI is also partnering with researchers, including those at Stanford University’s SCALE Initiative and through its own NextGenAI programme, to better understand how AI affects learning outcomes.

“We intend to publish a deeper analysis of what we’ve learned about the links between model design and cognition,” the company said, noting that these findings will shape future product features and educational initiatives.
