OpenAI Rolls Out Study Mode and Break Reminders for Teens

OpenAI has announced new rollouts and updates to its approach to teen use of ChatGPT, expanding access to AI while strengthening the safeguards available to help young people use it safely and responsibly. The updates include a default Study Mode with parental controls, more interactive learning experiences, and more frequent break reminders to encourage healthy usage habits.

In Singapore, learning is among the top three use cases for ChatGPT, underscoring why the update carries particular weight for the local market. The changes build on steps OpenAI has taken over the past year, including parental controls and age prediction.

Study Mode on by default for linked accounts

Parents with linked teen accounts can now turn on Study Mode directly through Parental Controls; once enabled, it will be on by default whenever a teen starts a new chat. Study Mode is designed to help students work through problems step by step rather than simply supplying an answer, and OpenAI says its early research has shown promising gains in student performance when learners use this kind of pedagogically aligned support.

Alongside Study Mode, OpenAI is introducing more learning-focused starter prompts and expanding interactive learning experiences across additional maths and science topics.

Healthier use and expanded notifications

Teens who spend extended time in ChatGPT will now receive more frequent break reminders. OpenAI is also expanding notifications for linked teen and parent accounts, including alerts when a teen account is banned for content that violates its policies on violent threats or harm.

OpenAI has also published educational resources in more than 50 languages aimed at helping parents navigate conversations about AI with their children, including guidance on talking to teens about AI and using ChatGPT at home. The rollout arrives as regulators and parents across the region continue to scrutinise how AI platforms handle younger users, making safety-focused product updates an increasingly routine part of how consumer AI companies compete for trust, not just usage.
