Talent-on-demand platform, Outsized, has released its Talent-On-Demand 2024 report, uncovering significant trends in the Southeast Asian (SEA) job market. According to the report, based on data from thousands of projects throughout 2023, SEA is experiencing rapid growth in the freelance sector, with an 85% increase in freelancer registrations compared to the previous year. Additionally, the region boasts the highest average day rates for independent talent globally, standing at an impressive US$544.
The report outlines the increasing reliance on skilled independent talent as a strategic necessity for businesses navigating the uncertainties and technological advancements of the current era. SEA, with its dynamic market conditions, has seen a significant shift towards agile and flexible models for capability building and execution, particularly in response to hiring freezes and large-scale redundancies.
“Southeast Asia’s talent landscape is undergoing a dynamic transformation, fueled by a burgeoning demand for highly skilled individuals. Faced with technological advancements and uncertainties in the job market, it’s no surprise that organisations are looking at agile and flexible models. This is where independent talent can also find themselves at the epicenter of opportunity, empowered by flexible work arrangements and the imperative for continuous upskilling.”
Anurag Bhalla, Co-Founder and Managing Director SEA, Outsized
The report also identifies three key trends shaping the SEA talent landscape:
- Digital Transformation: The financial services sector leads in digital innovation, focusing on digitizing services and reaching the unbanked population in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
- Supply Chain Optimisation: In response to socio-political disruptions and market volatility, organizations are rethinking their supply chains to enhance resilience and reduce risk exposure.
- New Talent Models: There is a shift towards more flexible, project-based roles, challenging professionals to adapt and continuously upskill to remain competitive.
Moreover, the report sheds light on the top skills in demand within SEA, with digital transformation skills drawing the highest average day rates globally. However, in SEA, the rates are significantly higher, reflecting the region’s leading position in the freelance economy. Skills in Change Management, Strategy, and Technology also rank among the top five in demand, underlining the region’s focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Digitalization, Automation, and Sustainability.
“As the skills landscape evolves, it can have a significant impact on an organisation’s ability to remain competitive and profitable,” Bhalla added. “Many organisations are working to keep up with the ever changing work landscape and it’s evident that workforce models would need to evolve as well. Hence, the imperative for agility within flexible workforce models transcends from asset to necessity during this time. Our prediction foresees a holistic shift in the approach to agile talent, where independent professionals are no longer confined to project-based roles but wielded as a proactive competitive advantage at scale. “

This report signals a pivotal stage in the economic and technological evolution of the SEA region, redefining job markets and highlighting the importance of adaptability, upskilling, and flexibility in the workforce.
