Akamai Signs First APAC Solar Deal in Singapore

Rooftop solar panels, representing renewable energy generation

Akamai has signed its first renewable energy agreement in Asia-Pacific, a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with EDP APAC covering a portfolio of 27 rooftop solar installations across Singapore.

Combined, the sites can generate up to 17,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to a 13-megawatt-peak system, and are expected to deliver an estimated 5,850 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in emissions abatement each year. All 27 sites in the portfolio are already operational, with 3Degrees providing advisory support to Akamai in structuring the deal.

Rooftop solar in a land-constrained market

The agreement reflects Akamai’s commitment to locally generated renewable electricity in Singapore, a highly urbanised and land-constrained country where rooftop space is one of the few viable levers for expanding solar deployment. It supports Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 and contributes to Akamai’s goal of reaching 100% renewable energy and net-zero emissions by 2030.

The deal comes as expanding digital and AI infrastructure drives higher energy demand across the region, pushing cloud and infrastructure providers to pair that growth with local, verifiable clean energy procurement rather than offsets alone.

Executives on the deal

“AI is accelerating demand for computing capacity, but the conversation cannot be only about adding more infrastructure. We also need to think about the energy required to support that growth… Singapore is an important place to begin because it demonstrates how rooftop solar can contribute to renewable energy generation even in a highly urbanised country,” said Mike Mattera, Director, Corporate Sustainability, Akamai.

“Akamai’s decision to partner with EDP reflects the growing role of renewable energy in supporting technology companies on their energy requirements and sustainability objectives… The agreement demonstrates the potential of Singapore’s solar market to support corporate renewable energy demand through locally generated clean electricity,” said Filipa Ricciardi, Executive Director, EDP APAC.

The Singapore installations build on Akamai’s broader renewable energy strategy, which also includes solar and wind projects across the United States and Europe.
