Akamai has signed its first renewable energy agreement in Asia-Pacific, a virtual power purchase agreement with EDP APAC that draws on rooftop solar systems across 27 locations in Singapore.
Combined, the systems can generate up to 17,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity a year, equivalent to a 13 megawatt-peak system. The project is expected to avoid an estimated 5,850 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually. All 27 sites are already operational, and 3Degrees advised Akamai on structuring the agreement.
Energy demand from AI infrastructure
The agreement supports Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 and Akamai’s goal of reaching 100 per cent renewable energy and net-zero emissions by 2030. Its earlier renewable projects cover solar and wind in the United States and Europe.
Mike Mattera, Director of Corporate Sustainability at Akamai, said that as AI drives demand for computing capacity, the conversation “cannot be only about adding more infrastructure”. He said Singapore is a useful place to start because it shows rooftop solar can contribute even in a highly urbanised country.
Filipa Ricciardi, Executive Director of EDP APAC, said the deal shows the potential of Singapore’s solar market to meet corporate demand for locally generated clean electricity.
