Cashback platform ShopBack has launched its in-store payment service, ShopBack Pay, in Hong Kong, adding Octopus as a payment option.
The move allows users to earn and redeem cashback directly when paying with Octopus, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. More than 500 outlets, including Ten Ren Tea, Gyu-Kaku and Sushi Express, have joined the programme.
ShopBack Pay lets shoppers pay in stores using Octopus or other payment methods linked to the ShopBack app. Cashback earned from a purchase is stored in the app and can be redeemed on the next visit to the same outlet. The feature also allows users to stack ShopBack rewards with existing credit card or wallet promotions.
ShopBack said its one million Hong Kong users have accumulated about HK$300 million in cashback from online shopping since 2022. With ShopBack Pay, those balances can now be used in physical stores.
Octopus, used by almost all Hong Kong residents, is expected to help expand ShopBack’s reach beyond e-commerce. “In partnership with ShopBack, shoppers can enjoy more payment options while earning rewards,” said Edwin Lai, general manager for retail business and partnerships at Octopus.
ShopBack entered Hong Kong in 2022 and partners with Taobao, Agoda, Klook, foodpanda and iHerb. The firm said transactions driven to merchants during September’s 9.9 sale rose 30 per cent year on year.
The company operates in 13 markets and serves more than 55 million users across Asia-Pacific.
