Alibaba Unveils AI-Powered Innovations at WAIC 2025, Signalling Leap from Lab to Life

Alibaba Group has announced a suite of AI-driven breakthroughs at the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), cementing its growing position in applied generative AI. The company showcased next-generation intelligent automotive cockpits, enterprise-grade AI integrations, and its first smart eyewear—Quark AI Glasses—each built on its self-developed Qwen large language models (LLMs).

These innovations signal Alibaba’s push to transition artificial intelligence from experimental prototypes to widely deployed, real-world applications across transport, facility management, and consumer technology.

“The innovations underscore Alibaba’s growing role as a leader in applied generative AI, delivering intelligent solutions that are not only technologically advanced but deeply integrated into everyday experiences and industrial workflows,” said Jingren Zhou, CTO of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.

Intelligent Cockpit Drives Next Evolution in Automotive AI

A key highlight at WAIC was Alibaba’s unveiling of its latest large multimodal model (LMM) solution, developed for intelligent automotive cockpits. Jointly created with Qualcomm and Banma, the platform harnesses the power of Qwen’s multimodal understanding, operating on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8397 system-on-chip.

At its core is Yan AI, Banma’s in-car assistant. The system offers more than just basic voice interaction—it can make restaurant reservations, book movie tickets, suggest music for long drives, and adjust cabin temperature based on context. Through Qwen’s capabilities in visual recognition and contextual reasoning, the AI becomes a proactive co-pilot.

Qwen Helps Global Firms Build Smarter, Greener Cities

Beyond consumer experiences, Alibaba spotlighted its expanding influence in enterprise AI adoption.

In a notable collaboration, Dutch lighting giant Signify has launched the lighting industry’s first generative AI agent powered by Qwen. Integrated into Interact City Flex, its connected street lighting platform, the GenAI agent allows city managers to issue natural-language commands for energy-saving strategies, flag anomalies, and streamline maintenance operations.

“By making use of Alibaba’s Qwen model in our GenAI Agent, we’re empowering cities to proactively reduce energy consumption and lower operational costs,” said Hans Nikol, Head of Open Innovation at Signify. “This collaboration marks an important step in intelligent city management and underlines our commitment to innovation and our vision for greener, brighter cities.”

Alibaba Steps into Smart Wearables with Quark AI Glasses

Alibaba also made its debut in the AI wearables market with the introduction of Quark AI Glasses, an all-day intelligent eyewear powered by Qwen and Quark’s multimodal AI.

The lightweight smart glasses offer hands-free calling, real-time translation, meeting transcription, and music playback. Designed with mobility in mind, the glasses support navigation via Amap’s near-eye display and are fully integrated with Alibaba’s digital ecosystem—letting users compare prices on Taobao, pay with Alipay, and receive travel updates from Fliggy via voice commands.

Scheduled for official launch in China by end-2025, the device underscores Alibaba’s ambition to bring ambient, context-aware AI into everyday life.

Qwen’s Growing Global Footprint

With over 400 million downloads and more than 140,000 derivative models created globally, Qwen has emerged as one of the most widely adopted open-source AI model series. Alibaba says it remains committed to open innovation, empowering developers, enterprises, and governments to build intelligent solutions tailored to real-world needs.
