Singapore Polytechnic (SP) has taken a significant step toward deepening its cross-border collaborations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM). The agreement was formalized at the Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC (ITAP) 2024, an event gathering global industry leaders to discuss the future of manufacturing. The collaboration seeks to enhance skills development and align industry needs with academic curricula, preparing graduates to meet the evolving demands of Industry 4.0.
The MoU, witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Mr Heng Swee Keat, marks the first collaboration of its kind between FMM and a Singaporean educational institution, and aims to bolster workforce capabilities in Singapore and Malaysia.
Strengthening Industry-Academia Ties
The partnership focuses on aligning curriculum development with the latest industry trends, particularly in automation, data analytics, and smart manufacturing. By fostering joint research and development (R&D) projects, as well as co-organizing training programs and seminars, the collaboration aims to produce graduates with industry-ready skills.
Ms Georgina Phua, Deputy Principal (Development) of Singapore Polytechnic, noted the significance of the partnership in advancing Industry 4.0 readiness: “By strengthening ties between industry and academia and promoting enterprise modernisation, we provide our graduates with the cutting-edge skills needed to thrive in the ever-changing manufacturing landscape.”

Driving Regional Economic Integration
The agreement also supports broader regional economic initiatives, such as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), designed to stimulate cross-border trade and develop business ecosystems. President of FMM, Mr Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai, highlighted the importance of the MoU in aligning with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, emphasizing that the partnership “will elevate the capabilities of local manufacturers and strengthen our position in global value chains.”
In addition to its agreement with FMM, SP signed five more partnerships at ITAP 2024, including collaborations with Singtel, Advanced Manufacturing Training Academy (AMTA), and Cragar Industries. These partnerships aim to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies and foster talent development in sectors critical to Industry 4.0 transformation.
At ITAP 2024, SP showcased its cutting-edge solutions in sustainability, digitalisation, and smart manufacturing. With a strong focus on sustainability, the Polytechnic launched the Sustainability Learning Journey, an initiative designed to help businesses embrace greener practices. This program will be officially launched at the Regional Industry Networking Conference (RINC) on 17 October 2024.
