As the nation eagerly prepares to celebrate its 58th birthday, Google is joining in the festivities with the launch of a new in-app mini-game on Google Pay. The game, titled “Hawker Pals,” is a tribute to Singaporeans’ deep-rooted love for food and aims to reward users with exciting cashback rewards and exclusive merchant vouchers.
The Hawker Pals mini-game will run from August 8 to August 20, 2023, allowing users to immerse themselves in the culinary world as hawkers. By completing eligible actions in the app, players stand a chance to win up to S$105 in cashback rewards and other attractive merchant vouchers.
“Singapore is the world’s top food-searching nation. This National Day, Google Pay is joining in the festivities by celebrating a topic that locals are most excited about – our delicious cuisine! Building off our well-loved Huat Pals social game earlier this year, our new group of Hawker Pals brings along more rewards and multiple cashback to our growing community of users throughout the two-week mini-game. We are excited to join Singaporeans in celebrating the nation’s 58th birthday as they continue to pay, scan, and connect with Google Pay.”
Patrick Teo, Engineering Director for Payments and Tech Site Leader at Google Singapore
The Hawker Pals game will be accessible on Google Pay starting from 8 a.m. on August 8. Embracing the unmatched love for hawker food in Singapore, the game revolves around users taking on the role of a hawker, feeding four delightful Pals – Meow Shanwang, Orh Lua & Orh nee, Merina Baey, and a mystery customer.

To win scratch cards and earn cashback rewards, users must complete different payment actions throughout the two-week period. These actions include sending at least S$10 to a friend on Google Pay, making a PayNow/FavePay transaction of at least S$3 to merchants on Google Pay, and participating in a short trivia quiz about Singapore.
In addition to the Hawker Pals mini-game, Google Pay is bringing back its popular ‘Hawker Scanner’ feature. By using image recognition technology, users can scan everyday items such as fruits and vegetables, commonly found in hawker centers, to earn partner vouchers. Successful scans will reward players with vouchers from renowned brands like JBL, Sephora, 6ixty8ight, Sony, as well as local favorites such as Irvin’s, Gain City, Ryde, Suntec+, and TADA.
To participate in the Hawker Pals mini-game and start earning rewards, users can download the Google Pay app from the Play Store (Android) or the App Store (iOS).
Moreover, Google is celebrating Singapore’s 58th birthday in the digital realm as well. On August 9, the iconic skyline of Clarke Quay will be featured as a Google Doodle on the Search homepage. Google Doodles have long been a medium to commemorate special holidays, anniversaries, and notable figures, and this tribute to Singapore’s National Day reflects the tech giant’s commitment to connecting with users through inspiring and culturally significant moments.
As Singaporeans gear up for the National Day celebrations, Google’s initiatives promise to add an extra layer of excitement and joy to the festivities. By combining the nation’s passion for food and its iconic landmarks, Google Pay’s Hawker Pals mini-game and the Clarke Quay Google Doodle are set to captivate the hearts of Singaporeans and reaffirm the company’s dedication to enhancing the lives of its users.
