TikTok boosts digital safety and wellbeing options in Singapore

With cyber wellness increasingly thrust into the limelight in Singapore, TikTok users here will now have more options to select from, in terms of the time and content they consume online, through updated Screen Time Management and Restricted Mode features on the app.

The updated Screen Time Management tool provides users more choices in deciding how much time they want to spend on TikTok, thereby empowering them to take charge of their digital wellbeing. From today, users will be able to select if they want to spend 40, 60, 90, 120 minutes per day on the app. This feature is password protected, if users reach their screen time limit they will need to enter a password to continue to use TikTok.

Additionally, TikTok is upgrading its Restricted Viewing Mode feature – once enabled, this is an optional account setting that will limit the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for all audiences. The feature is activated via password, which will be valid for 30 days. This tool, powered by machine learning algorithms, allows users to take control of the content they watch. Both features can be found under Privacy and Settings, located in the Digital Wellbeing section of the app.

TikTok’s ongoing commitment to online safety in Singapore

Amidst recent studies that call for families to moderate screen time instead of banning it, and with digital wellbeing being an increasing focus for Singapore, the launch of this latest safety product feature will enable TikTok to better understand and assist users in Singapore.

Promoting a safe and positive app experience is TikTok’s top priority and the company offers both in-app tools and educational content to provide users with all the information they need to have the best possible experience.

TikTok’s comprehensive Privacy and Safety settings currently offer users the option to:

  • Decide who can follow them
  • Decide who can send them comments
  • Decide who can react to their videos
  • Decide who can duet with them
  • Decide who can send them messages
  • Avoid content to be downloaded
  • Create a block list
  • ‘Filter Comments’ – users can self-define keywords that they would like to filter out of unwelcome wording from their comment section automatically.
  • Set their account private

Additionally, TikTok’s Safety Centre includes all the tools and tips about safety and wellbeing features and measures. Furthermore, the company recently launched a series of educational videos, ‘You’re in Control’, to share useful information on safety guidelines and tools. The videos are available now on TikTok (@tiktoktips).

As it fosters a global community that thrives on creativity and expression, TikTok is committed to helping make its millions of users feel safe and comfortable within the community, which is why it is continuously enhancing and updating its policies, tools and resources to promote a positive and safe app environment.
