M6 chip brings faster graphics and on-device AI
The M6 has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, each with two more cores than the M5. Apple says the GPU delivers up to 30 per cent faster graphics and up to 25 per cent faster on-device AI workloads, such as LLM prompt processing, compared with M5. The dual 16-core Neural Engine is up to 1.9 times faster than M5’s, according to the company.
Memory starts at 16GB and can be configured up to 32GB, with bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. For owners of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, Apple cites up to 13 times faster time to first token for LLM prompt processing, up to 11.7 times faster ray-traced rendering in Blender and up to 2.5 times faster project builds in Xcode. All figures come from Apple’s own testing.
Shelly Goldberg, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the 14-inch MacBook Pro is “the pro laptop of choice for a wide range of users”, from college students to business professionals and creators.
Battery life, display and connectivity
Apple quotes up to 24 hours of battery life, which it describes as the longest ever in a Mac. Fast charging reaches up to 50 per cent in 30 minutes with a compatible higher-wattage adapter, such as the 96W Power Adapter. Battery life varies by use and configuration.
The Liquid Retina XDR display reaches up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness, with a nano-texture option to cut glare. Wireless support moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Ports include HDMI, MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt 4 and an SDXC card slot, and the laptop supports up to two external displays. It comes in space black and silver.
The device uses 45 per cent recycled content overall, including a 100 per cent recycled aluminium enclosure. Apple says it is the first time it has used 100 per cent recycled tantalum in multiple capacitors.
Siri AI and macOS 27 on the MacBook Pro
The laptop ships with macOS 27, which includes Siri AI. Apple describes it as a more conversational and personal assistant that can draw on context from messages, emails and photos. Siri AI is in beta in macOS 27.2 and is available in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
Some Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models, including Siri AI, are subject to daily usage limits. Apple says expanded access will be available for a fee in future. The release does not say what that will cost.
