Sony Launches Spatial Audio Mic for Smartphones

Sony has announced the ECM-AX10, a USB-C microphone for smartphones that it says is the world’s first to earn Eclipsa Audio certification. It goes on sale in Singapore this month at a suggested retail price of S$249.

Eclipsa Audio is an open-source spatial audio format based on the IAMF specification, available royalty-free through the Alliance for Open Media. Sony says the microphone was certified on 15 September 2026.

How the spatial audio microphone works

The ECM-AX10 has four omnidirectional microphone capsules that pick up sound from all directions. Sony’s spatial audio processing then recreates a sense of space, direction and distance. It weighs about 24g and plugs straight into a compatible phone’s USB-C port, running iOS 18 or later, or Android 14 or later.

Users can record in three modes:

  • Ambisonics: for spatial audio production, and for publishing in Eclipsa Audio on YouTube.
  • Binaural: uses the spatial audio technology behind Sony’s 360 Reality Audio, for headphone playback where Eclipsa Audio is not supported.
  • Stereo: for everyday video and social content.

Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app lets creators shoot, check footage, make simple edits and export video with spatial audio on the phone. Support for 4K recording is planned from December 2026.

Tuning and availability in Singapore

Sony worked with Sony PCL, a Sony Group company, on tuning the microphone’s sound quality. Sony PCL sound engineer Michihiko Iwana said recordings of orchestral music had “remarkable depth.”

The ECM-AX10 will be sold at selected retail shops, Sony Stores and the Sony online store in Singapore.
