Sumsub, an AI-powered trust infrastructure provider for compliance operations, has launched the Sumsub Agentic AI Council, an APAC-focused cross-sector forum aimed at developing practical guardrails and governance frameworks for the safe adoption of agentic AI.

The Council, announced in Singapore on 29 September, is calling for leaders from policy, technology, academia, industry and civil society to join as founding advisors ahead of its inaugural meeting in the first quarter of 2027.

Nearly six in ten report unintended AI outcomes

Sumsub research found that 95 per cent of APAC businesses are already using or piloting multi-step AI systems with limited human input, yet nearly six in ten report that their autonomous AI systems have produced unintended outcomes. Separately, Deloitte has reported that close to three-quarters of APAC consumers already use AI to discover, compare and research products.

“The opportunity presented by agentic AI is becoming clearer with every new use case, but the conditions for responsible adoption in environments with real financial, operational and regulatory consequences are still taking shape, even as they become increasingly business-critical,” said Jason Chan, APAC government relations lead at Sumsub. “Drawing on our work helping organisations build trust and accountability in digital interactions, we have a front-row view of these challenges and see an opportunity to accelerate trusted and scalable AI adoption with the Sumsub Agentic AI Council.”

Three pillars: Adopt, Build and Govern

The Council’s work will focus on three pillars. Adopt will examine where agents deliver the most value and the conditions required for deployment; Build will address technical foundations such as agent identity, secure architecture and interoperability; and Govern will cover standards and accountability mechanisms.

Its first working group will focus on agentic commerce, addressing identity, delegated authority and oversight when AI agents act on behalf of consumers and businesses.

“The conversation around AI often begins with capability. Sustainable adoption, however, will depend not only on what these systems can do, but also on how confidently organisations can deploy and govern them,” said Mick Amelishko, AI advocate at Sumsub. “The Council will create a platform where experts from different disciplines can share perspectives and help advance approaches that support the responsible development of agentic AI.”

Aligning with regional policy frameworks

The Council said its work will complement regional policy efforts including Singapore’s Model AI Governance Framework for Agentic AI and Hong Kong’s proposed AI agent safety-management guidelines. Expressions of interest to become a founding advisor are now open, with advisors to be announced ahead of the Council’s inaugural meeting.
