The National University of Singapore (NUS) and OpenAI have expanded their strategic collaboration to give every student, faculty member and staff member access to ChatGPT Edu and Codex, deepening how artificial intelligence is used across teaching, research and administration at Singapore’s largest university.

The expansion builds on an existing partnership between OpenAI and the NUS School of Computing, announced in March 2026, and comes as new survey data points to strong AI appetite among the university’s student population.

Singapore students are already heavy AI users

A 2026 OpenAI-commissioned survey of 500 university students in Singapore found high levels of everyday AI use and a strong desire for more structured access to advanced tools:

• 94 per cent use AI several times a week or more, including 55 per cent who use it multiple times a day
• 95 per cent want more opportunities to apply advanced AI tools to real-world university projects
• 88 per cent want to build an AI app, product or company while at university
• 84 per cent believe AI literacy will become as fundamental as digital literacy or numeracy

“AI literacy will become as fundamental as digital literacy, writing, or numeracy,” according to 84 per cent of students surveyed, with 81 per cent believing AI skills will give them an advantage in the global workforce.

What the expanded access covers

Under the expanded collaboration, NUS and OpenAI will scale access and learning opportunities across the university in several ways, including enterprise-level security and controls for the campus-wide rollout, selected courses incorporating advanced AI tools into teaching, hackathons and build days connecting students to OpenAI’s global developer networks, and new research collaborations between OpenAI teams and NUS researchers.

The collaboration supports OpenAI’s commitment to developing the next generation of AI talent, strengthening Singapore’s applied AI capabilities, and supporting innovation across the region, according to the companies’ joint announcement.

The rollout also includes a focus on secure and governed AI adoption across the university, reflecting a broader trend among Southeast Asian institutions balancing rapid AI adoption with data governance and oversight requirements.
