BMW Becomes First Automaker to Sell Cars via ChatGPT

BMW has become the first automaker to make its vehicle configurator directly available inside ChatGPT, launching a dialogue-based plugin that lets users configure a BMW model through natural conversation rather than clicking through a traditional web configurator.

The plugin, accessible via ChatGPT’s Plugins menu on both desktop and mobile by searching for ‘BMW’, lets shoppers specify trim, colour and options through text or voice input. Recommendations are grounded in the live data of BMW’s existing vehicle configurator, and where a query goes beyond that dataset, ChatGPT can draw on supplementary web information if the relevant browsing features are enabled.

Dialogue over menus

BMW frames the move as part of a broader shift in how people search for information and make decisions, with dialogue-based systems increasingly replacing navigation through search engines or websites. By making its configurator available directly through ChatGPT, BMW adds a new digital channel for engaging with the brand, ahead of what is likely to be a wave of similar moves from competitors experimenting with conversational commerce.

The launch continues a run of AI integrations across the automotive sector this year, from in-car voice assistants to dealership chatbots, but BMW’s plugin is notable for moving the point of AI interaction outside the car and the brand’s own website entirely, into a third-party AI assistant that buyers may already be using for other tasks.

What it means for auto retail

For automakers and retailers more broadly, the move signals growing willingness to let AI assistants sit directly in the purchase journey rather than treating them purely as customer service tools. Whether conversational configuration meaningfully shifts buying behaviour, or simply adds a novel front door to the same underlying sales funnel, will likely depend on how many shoppers actually use ChatGPT – rather than a dealership or brand website – as their starting point for a big-ticket purchase.
