Google’s Gemini Usage Doubles Across Southeast Asia

Active users on Google‘s Gemini app in Southeast Asia have more than doubled over the past year, with Singapore recording the highest per capita adoption of the assistant globally, according to the company’s first Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026.

The report, which analyses usage across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, found the region has adopted Gemini faster than any other Google application, driven by a young, mobile-first population and the model’s strength in local languages.

Singapore leads regional engagement

Singapore has the highest per capita adoption of Gemini worldwide and is the fastest-growing market in Southeast Asia, with active users more than doubling in the final months of 2025. Young professionals aged 25 to 34 make up 40 per cent of the daily user base, and the country also logs the highest daily engagement in the region.

Nearly four in 10 user journeys in Singapore during the work week are dedicated to productive tasks such as explaining or debugging code, while weekend usage shifts toward personal finance and travel queries, which are more popular in Singapore than anywhere else in the region.

Local language performance drives regional growth

  • Nearly 70 per cent of prompts across the region are submitted in native languages, led by Vietnam at 89 per cent, Thailand at 87 per cent and Indonesia at 84 per cent
  • Gemini ranked as the best-performing large language model for Southeast Asian languages overall, according to AI Singapore’s SEA-HELM evaluation benchmark
  • Almost three in four Gemini requests in the region come from mobile devices, with voice, photo and video uploads making up more than 40 per cent of prompts
  • The region has generated 5 billion images using Google’s Nano Banana image model and almost 1 million songs using the Lyria 3 music model over the past year

“We are so proud to see that Gemini has become the AI of choice for many users across Southeast Asia. People aren’t just adapting to Gemini, they are using it in their own ways, in modalities they prefer, in languages they speak, and in contexts unique to their lives,” said Sapna Chadha, Vice President for Southeast Asia and South Asia Frontier at Google.

Google pushes agentic features into the region

Google is rolling out Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent integrated with Workspace tools such as Gmail, Docs and Slides, to Google AI Ultra subscribers in Southeast Asia this week, extending Gemini from an assistant that answers questions into one that completes tasks on a user’s behalf.

“AI adoption happens when technology feels native, not translated. In a region as linguistically rich as Southeast Asia, models must understand local context deeply to be used effectively,” said Dr Leslie Teo, Senior Director of AI Products at AI Singapore.

The findings underscore Singapore’s position as a bellwether market for consumer AI adoption in the region, even as enterprises continue to grapple with governance of the same tools in the workplace.
