Fastly has become the first edge cloud platform provider to join DIMPACT, a coalition working to align industry and policymakers around science-based measures to reduce the environmental impact of digital media delivery.
As DIMPACT’s first edge cloud participant, Fastly will contribute real-world edge network data and infrastructure expertise to help major media, streaming and publishing companies understand and optimise their digital carbon footprints, filling a gap in visibility at the data delivery layer.
Closing a measurement gap
Digital media emissions fall under Scope 3 greenhouse gas accounting, the indirect emissions generated across a company’s value chain, which have become a priority for organisations as digital media consumption continues to grow. DIMPACT, facilitated by SLR Consulting, provides industry decision-makers with data and resources to inform reductions in the carbon footprint of delivering digital content.
“Accurately calculating digital emissions requires a deep understanding of every hop data takes from the origin to the end-user device. Fastly’s expertise at the edge fills a crucial piece of the puzzle, moving the industry closer to a transparent, standardised blueprint for digital decarbonisation,” said Jason Bell, Director at SLR Consulting and Executive Sponsor of DIMPACT.
AI traffic adds to the challenge
Eoghan Kelly, who leads sustainability at Fastly, said the rise of AI-generated traffic is reshaping the internet and adding urgency to efforts to give the digital media sector granular data and actionable insight into its footprint.
“We want to empower the digital media sector with the granular data and actionable insights needed for companies to understand and optimise their digital footprints. We are committed to industry-wide collaboration to ensure the internet of the future is not just faster and more secure, but also more sustainable,” said Eoghan Kelly, Sustainability Lead at Fastly.
Fastly’s platform is used by organisations including Reddit, Universal Music Group and SeatGeek to deliver fast, secure online experiences at global scale.
