FairPrice Group scales AI-powered retail to 48 Singapore supermarkets

FairPrice Group will roll out a suite of Google Cloud AI-powered solutions across 48 supermarket outlets in Singapore by end-2026, scaling innovations first piloted at its Punggol Digital District store in August 2025.

The expansion covers four technologies developed under FairPrice Group’s Store of Tomorrow (SOT) programme: smart shopping carts, digital price cards, the ShopBeyond hybrid retail format, and Grocer Genie, an AI-powered staff operations app. FairPrice Group was one of only three companies globally selected to showcase its retail AI work at Google Cloud Next ’26 this week.

Smart carts cut checkout times to 36 seconds

Integrated with Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, the smart carts enable in-aisle navigation, personalised promotions, and scan-and-pay functionality. Since their introduction at FairPrice Punggol Coast Mall, average checkout times have dropped from several minutes to 36 seconds. The carts are targeted for rollout across 48 FairPrice Xtra and Finest outlets by end-2026.

Digital price cards, replacing printed alternatives across 48 outlets, are projected to save 15,000 man-hours and S$138,000 annually. The cards will use the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform to generate dynamic product visuals alongside real-time pricing and promotional data.

Grocer Genie automates store operations for frontline staff

The Grocer Genie app, also built on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, gives store teams AI-driven analysis of sales, inventory, and customer satisfaction metrics alongside automated task management. It is slated for deployment to all supermarket store teams by end-2026.

Sarah Jane Vasquez, Branch Manager at the Punggol Digital District outlet, said the tools have changed how her team operates.

“New digital tools like Grocer Genie help me automate manual work like eyeballing when shelves need to be restocked and even staff rostering. This frees up time for me to lead and coach my team.”

The ShopBeyond format, which connects in-store physical displays to FairPrice Group’s full online product catalogue for on-the-spot purchases and scheduled delivery, is currently live at FairPrice Punggol Coast Mall and FairPrice Parc Point, with a broader rollout planned in the coming years.

Deeper agentic AI collaboration with Google Cloud

Mark Micallef, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Google Cloud, said the partnership is moving beyond individual AI pilots toward an interconnected system of agents operating across the grocery value chain, leveraging Google Cloud’s Agentic Data Cloud and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

Vipul Chawla, Group CEO of FairPrice Group, said the priority is reducing friction in everyday shopping. The SOT programme, launched with Google Cloud in June 2025, commits FairPrice Group to piloting 20 digital solutions per year across its retail network.

Close to 900,000 Link members have also updated their FairPrice Group app profiles via Singpass MyInfo since the feature was integrated in May 2025, enabling automatic application of eligible discounts at checkout.
