Tenable Adds Agentless OT Discovery to Close Cyber-Physical Security Gaps

2021 Predictions By Security Experts

Tenable has launched a new OT asset discovery engine that gives security teams immediate visibility into cyber-physical assets — including operational technology, IoT, and shadow IT devices — without requiring additional hardware, agents, or specialist deployments. The capability is built directly into Tenable’s existing exposure management platform.

The Security Gap It Closes

Cyber-physical systems have long been a blind spot in enterprise security. Gaining visibility into OT environments traditionally requires time-consuming deployments of specialised hardware and bolted-on software tools. More than half of CISOs are now responsible for OT security, yet 45 per cent of modern OT compromises originate in IT environments, making the convergence of IT and OT security increasingly urgent.

Tenable says its new VM-Native OT Discovery capability eliminates this friction by integrating OT discovery directly into the Tenable One Exposure Management Platform. Customers on Tenable One, Tenable Vulnerability Management, and Tenable Security Center can access the feature with no additional procurement required.

What Early Customers Found

Tenable early access customers spanning hospitality, financial services, education, food and beverage, and government sectors uncovered significant numbers of previously unknown assets upon initial deployment. Most customers found between 100 and 1,000 or more unique OT and IoT assets, including some carrying critical vulnerabilities.

The discovery engine surfaces device attributes including vendor, model, firmware, backplane details, and running state — without causing operational disruption to live environments.

Broader Exposure Management

The OT discovery capability unifies cyber-physical asset and exposure data within the Tenable One platform, providing security teams with a consolidated view of exposure across AI, IT, cloud, identity, and OT domains. Tenable was recently named a Challenger in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for CPS Protection Platforms.

“Cyber-physical risk can’t remain a blind spot in exposure management. We’re giving organizations an immediate, low-friction way to bring OT into scope, so they can gain visibility, meet compliance requirements and start reducing risk from day one, without adding new infrastructure,” said Eric Doerr, Chief Product Officer at Tenable.

The new OT Discovery engine is immediately available to all eligible Tenable customers.
