Internet Reacts to Apple’s iPhone 17: Praise, Memes and Divided Opinions

Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone 17 has once again set the internet alight — not just with excitement for its upgraded features, but also with heated debates over its bold design choices and higher pricing.

Excitement for Long-Awaited Upgrades

For many Apple fans, the standard iPhone 17 finally delivers features they’ve been asking for. The inclusion of a 120Hz ProMotion display, brighter screen, larger battery, and 256GB base storage won praise across platforms. One MacRumors commenter summed up the sentiment: “Hell has frozen over: The standard iPhone has a 120Hz display… This one deserves a hearty FINALLY.”

On YouTube and Reddit, several users echoed that this year’s base iPhone feels like “a Pro already,” citing the inclusion of the A19 chip and “tremendous value” compared to past models.

Design Backlash Sparks Memes

If the specs impressed, the iPhone 17 Pro’s design drew the opposite reaction. Its chunky rectangular camera bar — nicknamed the “plateau” — became instant meme fodder. X users compared it to stovetops and construction cones, while Reddit threads were filled with blunt remarks: “Sorry. F—ing ugly. This time, the entire Pro line is a fail.”

The new Cosmic Orange colourway polarised audiences further. Some admired it as bold and futuristic, while others joked it looked like safety equipment. Instagram buzz intensified when Apple released a collab with singer Dua Lipa showcasing the orange iPhone 17 Pro, prompting comments like: “Dua looks beautiful but the phone gives me little hope for battery life.”

Debate Over Price and Value

Apple also raised prices on certain models, sparking frustration online. The slim new iPhone 17 Air, starting at S$1,599, was singled out for offering less — including only a single rear camera — at a higher cost. “Feels like a downgrade, not an upgrade,” one Redditor fumed. The Pro model starts from S$1,749.

Still, others argued that across the board, Apple provided more value for money, especially with the base iPhone 17.

Tech YouTubers and reviewers added to the noise. While some poked fun at the Pro’s look, others highlighted real improvements. Analysts noted that while first impressions are divided, many past “controversial” iPhone designs have eventually been accepted — or even embraced.

The Verdict So Far

The iPhone 17 launch has sparked a mixed but vibrant response online. On one side, there is genuine excitement over meaningful upgrades like performance, display, and battery life. On the other, backlash over design and pricing has fuelled a flood of memes and sarcastic commentary.

Apple has once again achieved what it does best — keeping the iPhone at the centre of global conversation. Whether the design grows on users over time remains to be seen, but for now, the internet is buzzing — half in admiration, half in ridicule.
