Gearbox Software and 2K have unveiled new details about the endgame and post-launch content for Borderlands 4, ahead of its release on 12 September 2025. The next instalment in the popular looter-shooter series will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, followed by a Nintendo Switch 2 version on 3 October.

Expanded Endgame

Players will be able to continue their progression in Borderlands 4 after completing the campaign through a reimagined endgame system. Central to this is the return of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, which introduces five ranks of escalating difficulty. Unlike past iterations, progression no longer requires replaying the main campaign. Instead, players will face curated challenges designed to test different character builds.

Each rank will grant exclusive “Firmware” bonuses, which enhance gear with transferable stat boosts. Additional activities include Weekly Wildcards with guaranteed legendary rewards, an enlarged Weekly Big Encore Boss fight, and Maurice’s Black Market Machine, which offers rotating loot across the game world. All activities support online matchmaking.

Post-Launch Content

Following release, Gearbox will roll out a combination of free updates and paid downloadable content (DLC). Two main types of DLC have been announced: Story Packs and Bounty Packs.

The first Story Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, introduces a new region, a darker horror-inspired storyline, and the first post-launch playable Vault Hunter. It also includes new gear, missions, skins, and customisation options.

Bounty Packs will expand on side characters’ stories, beginning with missions centred on Rush, leader of the Outbounders. Each pack features a new boss, legendary equipment, cosmetics, and a Vault Card system offering unlockable rewards.

Free Seasonal Events

All players will receive access to free seasonal mini-events, starting in October with Horrors of Kairos. These events will add cosmetic rewards, new legendary weapons, and weather variations. Invincible Bosses will also return, offering challenging battles in custom arenas. Each boss will be paired with a new level of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode and exclusive loot.

Borderlands 4 is scheduled to launch globally on 12 September 2025, with ongoing content drops expected throughout the year. The additional roadmap underscores Gearbox’s aim to extend the life of the title beyond its campaign.
