Singapore’s leading multi-currency digital wallet YouTrip has rolled out its long-awaited Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) wallet feature to all local users, aiming to deliver greater savings and convenience for travellers heading across the Causeway.

The feature, now live on the YouTrip app, allows users to exchange and store MYR in advance, locking in favourable exchange rates with no hidden fees or markups — a timely move as Malaysia continues to be a popular weekend getaway for Singaporeans.

Usage data from YouTrip underscores a growing trend: travellers have become more strategic about foreign currency exchanges. Many monitor MYR rates up to two weeks before trips, a behaviour that saw a surge during the recent Hari Raya Puasa and leading into the Good Friday long weekend.

This shift was especially apparent on 9 April, when the MYR fell to 3.33 against the Singapore dollar. YouTrip saw a 130% jump in in-app MYR conversions that day alone, with twice as many users locking in the rate compared to the previous day.

“With the ability to lock in MYR exchange rates through our in-app wallet, we’re giving users greater control and flexibility,” said Kelvin Lam, Chief Operating Officer of YouTrip. “We deliberately launched this feature with perks like free shuttle rides and cashback to provide more value, convenience and rewards.”

Free Causeway Bus Rides for YouTrip Users

To celebrate the launch, YouTrip is offering free shuttle bus rides between Singapore and Johor Bahru across four weekends — from 19 April to 11 May — with over 15,000 seats available.

The buses will run between Kranji MRT station and Mid Valley Southkey in JB every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to 9:30pm, at 30-minute intervals. Return trips will depart from the same location, providing a hassle-free cross-border travel option.

Users can reserve one round-trip slot per person via YouTrip’s official Instagram or Telegram channels. Seats for each weekend will be released every Monday, with bookings for this weekend opening at 2:00pm today.

Cashback Perks Across Malaysia

Beyond the wallet and shuttle, YouTrip is rolling out generous retail perks to sweeten the deal.

The first 5,000 users who spend at least S$200 in MYR transactions will receive 3% cashback, capped at S$9. In addition, exclusive in-store cashback offers of up to 10% will be available at JD Sports, CARiNG Pharmacy, Decathlon (selected outlets), and Lotus’s from 16 April to 17 June 2025.

Marketing Stunt Lights Up the Causeway

In a bold promotional twist, YouTrip also claimed credit for the mysterious “purple cloud” sightings that recently went viral on TikTok. The augmented reality stunt, which attracted over three million views, was part of the campaign reveal for the new MYR wallet.
