Pragma, a leading backend game engine provider, has announced its acquisition of FirstLook, a premier playtesting and player engagement platform. The deal aims to provide game studios with a seamless solution for both building and scaling games while fostering strong player communities from the outset.
By integrating FirstLook’s suite of community management tools into its existing backend engine, Pragma now offers developers a unified platform for everything from online game deployment to community engagement across multiple channels.
A One-Stop Solution for Game Development and Community Building
Pragma, founded by engineers behind platforms for League of Legends, Destiny 2, and Apex Legends, provides essential game infrastructure services such as matchmaking, analytics, monetisation, and player data management. It powers titles from renowned studios like Gardens, People Can Fly, Frost Giant, and Square Enix External Studios.
With FirstLook’s integration, developers can streamline their player interactions by managing playtests, onboarding testers, distributing in-game rewards, collaborating with content creators, and updating players—all from a single interface. FirstLook has already facilitated over 100 playtest events, supported 30 Discord communities, and onboarded 100,000 playtesters since launching in 2024, with plans to quadruple that number.
Pragma CEO Eden Chen highlighted the importance of community engagement in a game’s success: “The best games aren’t just well-built; they’re supported by passionate communities, grown through word of mouth, virality, and influencer engagement. Bringing FirstLook into the Pragma ecosystem means studios no longer need to piece together fragmented solutions to engage with their players.”
Enhancing Playtesting and Engagement for Developers
For developers already using Pragma, FirstLook’s integration introduces new features such as entitlement rewards and seamless management of limited-access events. Later this month, FirstLook will roll out additional tools, including content creator management and cross-platform in-game rewards, ensuring smooth player experiences across different gaming platforms.
Robert van Hoesel, Co-Founder of FirstLook, sees the acquisition as a major step forward: “At FirstLook, we’ve made it our mission to help developers build, manage, and engage with their communities before a game even launches. Joining Pragma expands our reach and provides incredible time-savings for developers looking to create both a game and a thriving player base.”
Game studios like Frost Giant have already benefited from FirstLook’s tools. Cara LaForge, Director of Business Operations at Frost Giant Studios, praised the platform’s ability to streamline playtesting while maintaining security and compliance: “FirstLook took the risk out of our closed beta playtests, streamlining everything from registration to NDAs to key redemption while keeping security airtight. It was a game changer and did what Steam’s beta playtest tool couldn’t.”
With this acquisition, Pragma is positioning itself as a comprehensive solution for game developers, bridging the gap between game infrastructure and player engagement – two critical pillars for any successful live-service title.
