Palo Alto Networks Unveils Open API for Quantum Random Number Generation

One Identity Offers Free Security Risk Assessment to SolarWinds Customers and Free Safeguard for Proactive Privilege Defense

Palo Alto Networks, a global leader in cybersecurity, has announced the launch of a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) Open API framework. Developed in collaboration with six leading QRNG technology providers—Anametric, ID Quantique, Qrypt, Quantinuum, Quantropi, and Quside—the initiative aims to enhance multi-vendor interoperability and drive the adoption of quantum-resistant security systems.

The QRNG Open API allows organisations to integrate quantum-generated randomness into their cryptographic operations, ensuring resilience against future quantum threats. The framework is designed to be technology-agnostic, enabling enterprises to build secure systems without being locked into a specific vendor.

Why It Matters

As quantum computing advances, so does the risk of quantum-enabled cyberattacks that could break traditional encryption. Palo Alto Networks’ Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) Open API aims to address this challenge by promoting interoperability and facilitating the adoption of quantum-safe cryptographic systems.

“Helping the world become quantum-safe is much more than any one cybersecurity company, government agency, or critical infrastructure organisation can tackle alone,” said Rich Campagna, SVP of Product Management at Palo Alto Networks. “Collaboration in the QRNG field is vital to future-proofing against quantum computing threats, and we are committed to working with standards bodies, global governments, and industry partners to steer the industry toward standardisation.”

Preparing for a Post-Quantum Future

With the rise of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning in tandem with quantum computing, traditional encryption methods are at risk. Quantum computers have the potential to break conventional cryptographic algorithms, making quantum-safe measures a necessity.

QRNG technology leverages quantum mechanics to generate truly random numbers, which are essential for secure cryptographic key generation. Experts recommend combining QRNG with newly released NIST post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards to ensure the highest level of security.

By eliminating proprietary barriers, Palo Alto Networks’ QRNG Open API helps organisations integrate quantum randomness into their security strategies. The API, available through the company’s GitHub portal, can be embedded into any application. Later this year, Palo Alto Networks’ Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) will also support the API, allowing entropy from QRNG sources to be incorporated into network security operations.

Industry Leaders Support Standardisation

The QRNG Open API initiative has gained support from major players in the quantum technology sector. Partners emphasised the importance of open standards in accelerating adoption and ensuring security in a quantum-powered future.

“As a leader in quantum technology, Quside is committed to advancing the adoption of quantum randomness in cybersecurity and high-performance computing,” said Fernando de la Iglesia, VP of Product at Quside. “This initiative is crucial for establishing clear and robust guidelines that meet precise user needs.”

Kenny Huebsch, Director of Software Engineering at Qrypt, highlighted the need for simplified integration: “The biggest hurdle in helping organisations adopt quantum entropy isn’t convincing them of its value—it’s the complexity of integration. Standardisation is an essential step toward broader adoption.”

Wil Oxford, CEO of Anametric, reinforced the significance of the initiative: “A standardised QRNG Open API is crucial for the cybersecurity landscape, ensuring a seamless transition to post-quantum cryptography. Our collaboration will help secure digital infrastructure against emerging threats.”

Other industry leaders echoed similar sentiments, underscoring the need for an open and collaborative approach to QRNG adoption.
