In a world increasingly driven by artificial intelligence, businesses are moving beyond the hype to turn generative AI (GenAI) into a strategic advantage. Deloitte AI Institute™’s latest report, The State of Generative AI in the Enterprise: Now decides Next, offers a deep dive into how companies across the globe are tackling challenges to achieve sustainable value through GenAI.

Based on insights from 2,773 director- to C-suite-level executives across 14 countries, the report uncovers the trends shaping GenAI’s adoption. While enthusiasm for the technology remains strong, organisations are adopting a more measured approach, focusing on scaling proven use cases that deliver measurable returns.

A Shift Towards Strategic Deployment

“GenAI use cases are rapidly proliferating in leading enterprises across industries,” said Joe Ucuzoglu, Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte Global. “We are seeing a shift as leaders move past the initial hype to strategically deploying GenAI in the core of their businesses.”

The report highlights success stories, including how GenAI boosts software security in banking, accelerates sales in tech, and powers content creation in consumer-facing industries. Despite these wins, scaling GenAI remains a challenge, with more than two-thirds of respondents estimating that less than 30% of their experiments will scale within six months.

The ROI Reality Check

A promising takeaway is that nearly all surveyed organisations report measurable ROI from their most advanced GenAI initiatives. Key standouts include IT and cybersecurity, with 44% of respondents saying their cybersecurity efforts using GenAI have exceeded ROI expectations.

However, organisations acknowledge the uneven pace of adoption. Scaling remains a work in progress, as businesses navigate regulatory uncertainties and workforce gaps. According to Jim Rowan, Applied AI Leader and Principal at Deloitte Consulting LLP, “Future-thinking organisations are as bullish as ever in building bridges to ROI…with a focus on governance, collaboration and continued iteration as key accelerators in the race for sustainable value.”

Challenges on the Horizon

The report identifies regulatory compliance as the most significant barrier to GenAI adoption, with concerns climbing from 28% in the first survey wave to 38% now. Moreover, 69% of respondents believe implementing a governance strategy will take more than a year.

The rise of agentic AI – autonomous systems designed to meet objectives with minimal intervention – shows promise, with 26% of respondents already exploring this technology extensively. But its adoption also underscores the need for stricter governance, given its complexity and associated risks.

The Bottom Line

As organisations double down on GenAI, the focus is shifting from rapid experimentation to sustainable integration. The journey is far from over, but as Deloitte’s report suggests, the businesses that prioritise strategic planning and governance will be best positioned to harness GenAI’s transformative potential.
