As online scams continue to escalate, Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704) has unveiled its latest solution, Trend Micro Check, a mobile app designed to help consumers identify scams and AI threats such as deepfakes. The app leverages artificial intelligence to analyze content, such as social media posts and live video calls, to determine their legitimacy and protect users from potential threats.
With S$651.8 million lost to scams in Singapore last year, the scale of the problem is alarming. According to a recent study by Trend Micro, 68% of Singaporean consumers reported a worsening of online scams in the past year, while 85% expressed concern about the safety of their family members.
Despite a high level of confidence among respondents (69%) in spotting scams, many remain cautious. Around 74% indicated they would welcome an app to verify the legitimacy of emails, social media posts, or phone numbers—underscoring the need for additional layers of security.
AI-Powered Features Target Emerging Threats
The Trend Micro Check app offers several AI-driven features aimed at proactively shielding consumers from online dangers. These include:
Scam Check: Assesses the risk level of content in real-time, providing users with a summary of potential security concerns.
Deepfake Scan: Identifies AI-manipulated “face-swapping” scams during live video calls.
SMS Filter: Blocks spam and scam messages before they hit the inbox.
Web Guard: Filters risky websites and suspicious ads to prevent exposure.
The global landscape is equally concerning. “With more than $1 trillion lost by consumers worldwide to scams last year, more must be done to protect them,” said Jorij Abraham, Managing Director of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance. Abraham praised Trend Micro’s commitment to tackling these threats, highlighting the company’s role as the first Foundation Partner of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance.

As AI tools become more accessible to cybercriminals, companies like Trend Micro are working tirelessly to stay ahead of emerging threats. “We are leading the race against these threats and working tirelessly to stay ahead of them with our own AI capabilities,” said Tim Falinski, VP Consumer Business, AMEA at Trend Micro.
Trend Micro Check is now available for download on iOS and Android devices, offering consumers a proactive solution to safeguard against the rising tide of scams and AI-driven deceptions.
