M1 Limited (M1), a prominent mobile network operator in Singapore, has announced significant strides in its sustainability journey with the greening of its base transceiver stations (BTS) and the deployment of smart network management technology. These initiatives underscore M1’s commitment to decarbonizing the telecommunications industry and reducing its environmental footprint.
M1 has installed solar panels at eight BTS sites across Singapore, resulting in a 20% reduction in electricity consumption per site. This translates to approximately 4,800 kWh saved annually for each BTS site—equivalent to over 13 months of energy usage in an average 4-room Singaporean household. The solar installations at key locations like Raffles Lighthouse and St John Island further reinforce M1’s efforts to cut reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
The telco plans to expand its solar panel installations to an additional 10 sites by 2025. M1’s Chief Technical Officer, Denis Seek, highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating, “By integrating innovative technological solutions like Smart Network Power Management and renewable energy sources such as solar power, M1 is paving the way for a more eco-friendly telco industry.”
Smart Network Management: A Technological Leap
In addition to its renewable energy initiatives, M1 has implemented smart network management technology across its 4G network as of July 2024. This system dynamically adjusts power consumption based on real-time traffic conditions, reducing energy usage during low-traffic periods. Initial trials indicate that the technology could save up to 300,000 kWh annually across M1’s network.
M1’s Sustainability Report 2023 offers insights into its broader environmental efforts. The telco recorded a 3.2% reduction in total energy consumption in 2023 compared to the previous year. Additionally, M1 significantly reduced its carbon footprint, with a 22.4% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions year-on-year, and a remarkable 57.0% reduction compared to its 2020 baseline.
Looking ahead, M1 has set ambitious goals, including sourcing at least 30% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2024 and aiming for 50% by 2025. Aligning with Keppel’s sustainability targets, M1 plans to halve its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.
Next Steps
M1’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The telco was recently recognized in the Asia-Pacific Climate Leaders 2024 list, a joint initiative by the Financial Times and Statista, which acknowledges companies that have successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions relative to revenue.
As part of Keppel Corporation, M1’s sustainability initiatives align with the broader corporate strategy to create sustainable ICT business solutions. M1’s roadmap for the future is firmly rooted in green technology, aiming to drive both environmental sustainability and sustainable business growth.
