EduSpaze, Singapore’s pioneering EdTech accelerator, in collaboration with Temasek Foundation, has launched the “Temasek Foundation Education Challenge: Empowering Teachers through EdTech.” This initiative aims to identify and support innovative EdTech solutions that can transform the roles of educators, enhance teaching effectiveness, and extend educational reach to underserved communities.
A Platform for Innovation
The challenge will shortlist ten start-ups that will compete in the finals on 6 November 2024 during EduTech Asia, the region’s largest education and EdTech conference. The top three winners will be awarded grants totaling up to S$90,000. The top finalist will also receive an exclusive opportunity to participate in an industry boot camp and attend Bett London, the world’s largest EdTech exhibition, in January 2025.
Additionally, all finalists will gain access to up to S$500,000 in cloud credits provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Challenge’s Tech for Good partner. These resources aim to foster the growth of start-ups focused on addressing key challenges in education.
Alex Ng, Managing Director of EduSpaze, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, “This partnership with Temasek Foundation represents a significant step forward in our mission to empower and foster innovation in the EdTech sector. We are eager to see the innovative solutions that will emerge from this challenge and the impact they will have on education in Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia.”
Focus Areas for Transformation
The Temasek Foundation Education Challenge is designed to support education systems and educators across three critical areas:
- Evolving the Role of Educators: Start-ups are encouraged to create solutions that redesign the roles of teachers, reduce administrative burdens, and promote teacher retention. This includes leveraging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), and peer-to-peer learning platforms.
- Improving the Effectiveness of Teaching: Solutions should aim to support professional development for teachers, adapt teaching methods to diverse learners, and align skill sets with market demands.
- Reaching the Underserved: The challenge seeks innovative models that offer affordable, tailored educational services to new market segments, including rural areas.
Tan Shin Gee, Senior Director of Temasek Foundation, emphasized the challenge’s broader goals: “We hope to catalyse innovative solutions that will foster a more adaptable and future-ready learning environment, through improving instructional quality, innovative learning models, and continuous professional growth.”

Call for Nominations
The challenge is open to innovators with solutions ready for piloting, targeting learners aged 10-25 in Southeast Asia. Nominations are now open and will close on 30 September 2024. Eligible start-ups are encouraged to apply and seize this opportunity to shape the future of education in the region.
Ashley Tan, International Head of Social Impact & Sustainability at AWS, added, “Together with Temasek Foundation, we support learners from underserved communities to thrive in a digital world, enable EdTechs to dream big and scale faster, and build the capacity of the global education ecosystem to deliver more equitable learning opportunities.”
