The National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore, in collaboration with creative agency LePub Singapore, has announced the launch of Playbrary. This pioneering platform transforms iconic literary works into interactive adventure games using Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI), marking a novel approach to encouraging reading through the gamification of classic novels.
Playbrary transforms the traditional reading experience by allowing users to dive into the narratives of classics like “Frankenstein,” “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” “Jane Eyre,” and “Pride and Prejudice” among others, but with a twist. It combines storytelling with digital gameplay, enabling players to assume the roles of beloved characters such as Sherlock Holmes and navigate through the story with choices that affect outcomes, thereby adding a layer of interactive engagement to the reading process.

This initiative is part of the NLB’s National Reading Movement, aimed at fostering a culture of reading among Singaporeans by encouraging them to set aside time for exploring various genres. Playbrary is not only accessible and free for everyone but also serves as a gateway for digital-savvy audiences to develop a deeper appreciation for classic literature.
“This is part of NLB’s ongoing efforts to make Generative AI accessible to all. Our partnership with LePub Singapore opens new, innovative ways for more to read and learn. Through the gamification experience of Playbrary, we hope to encourage more Singaporeans to read these classics after playing the game. We also invite like-minded partners onboard to explore emerging technologies that inspire new ways of interaction with NLB’s resources, such as through Gen AI.”
Ng Cher Pong, Chief Executive Officer, NLB
Playbrary stands as a testament to NLB’s commitment to enhancing the learning experience by integrating emerging technologies. With plans to expand the library of classic titles available on the platform, Playbrary invites players to embark on literary journeys like never before, fostering a renewed interest in classic literature through an immersive, interactive medium.
For those eager to explore this unique fusion of literature and interactive gaming, Playbrary is available from 2 April 2024, at https://playbrary.ai. This initiative also opens the door for like-minded partners to collaborate with NLB in exploring new technologies that enrich the library’s resources and the ways people interact with them.
