Singapore is taking a significant leap towards becoming an AI powerhouse with the establishment of a new Centre for AI, a joint venture between the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and global AI leader NVIDIA. This collaboration aims to accelerate AI adoption across various sectors and cultivate a rich pipeline of AI talent, aligning with the nation’s goal to triple its AI specialists within the next five years.
The Centre for AI is not just a hub for research and development; it’s a beacon for innovation, offering end-to-end AI solutions to both industry and government sectors. From customising AI models to developing bespoke applications, the Centre is set to transform the technological landscape by making AI more accessible and adaptable to specific needs.
In an effort to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, SIT has integrated its ICT and postgraduate programs with projects that utilise NVIDIA’s cutting-edge AI technologies. This hands-on approach ensures that students are not just passive learners but active contributors to the AI revolution, equipped with skills that are highly relevant and in demand.
“As AI continues unlocking new capabilities for industries across the world, we look forward to forging ahead in nurturing talent and building the competencies of the next generation for the thriving AI industry. The inauguration of this Centre, built in collaboration with NVIDIA, symbolises our dedication to fostering an AI ecosystem of creators and users for businesses and talents to thrive on the global platform to address the evolving landscape of generative AI.”
Professor Susanna Leong, Vice President (Applied Research), SIT
As Singapore commits $1 billion to AI development over the next five years, the Centre’s initiatives align perfectly with the national strategy to cement its position as a leader in AI innovation. With more than ten AI projects already underway, including collaborations with SMRT Corporation and CTMetrix, the Centre is showcasing the practical benefits of AI, from enhancing safety in public transport to improving defect detection in manufacturing.
Mr Eugene Teh, Deputy Group Chief Data Officer, SMRT Corporation, said, “SMRT is pleased to collaborate with Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and NVIDIA on AI and data-driven initiatives to enhance our operational efficiency and service standards. This milestone is an expansion of our successful collaboration with SIT since our MOU signing in Nov 2022, which has seen the completion of several key projects under the SMRT-SIT Transport Living Lab. We look forward to jointly exploring more innovative solutions that will support SMRT’s efforts to ‘Do Right, Do Good and Do Well’ as a steward of the public transport network.”
The Centre’s reach extends beyond research and development; it’s a catalyst for industry engagement, as demonstrated during the inaugural SIT Industry Day. This event brought together AI enthusiasts and industry leaders to explore AI’s future impact on various sectors, featuring demonstrations of AI solutions tailored to real-world challenges.
