Canon Unveils EOS R100: The Smallest, Lightest, and Most Affordable EOS R System Camera

Canon has introduced the EOS R100, a groundbreaking addition to its EOS R system lineup. This camera stands as Canon’s smallest, lightest, and most budget-friendly offering within the EOS R series, making professional-level photography accessible to a wider range of users.

The EOS R100 seamlessly combines affordability, innovation, and performance, reflecting Canon’s commitment to accessibility. Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing at Canon Singapore, expressed the company’s vision, stating, “At Canon, we believe in enabling accessibility. This new addition to the EOS R family seamlessly merges affordability, innovation, and performance. We invite users to unlock the limitless possibilities of our groundbreaking EOS R system and RF lens ecosystem to experience photography and videography like never before. The EOS R100 was designed to inspire all photographers, regardless of their budget or skill level.”

Despite its compact size and lightweight construction, the EOS R100 delivers superior image quality. It features an APS-C size CMOS image sensor that captures clear and sharp images with beautifully resolved details. Weighing approximately 356g, which is equivalent to a 330ml canned drink, the camera can easily fit into an everyday bag, ensuring that users are always ready to capture fleeting moments and treasured memories. With built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, users can conveniently share their photos on social media platforms via the Canon Camera Connect app on their smartphones.

The EOS R100 is designed to elevate the shooting experience for users. It incorporates a viewfinder and a generous grip, making it easier for beginners to transition into shooting like professional photographers. The clear, high-definition built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) provides enhanced visibility, particularly in outdoor settings under strong sunlight. Additionally, the rubberized textured grip offers a firmer and more stable hold on the camera, enabling users to capture steady shots with ease.

The camera’s fast and highly accurate autofocusing system, supported by Eye and Face Detection technology, ensures that subjects remain in sharp focus across a wide area of the image. Even if subjects are moving or fidgeting within the frame, the EOS R100 will capture amazingly sharp pictures. When used with a compatible lens, including the kit lens, image stabilization further enhances the ability to capture sharp handheld photos, even in low-light conditions. The built-in flash provides additional lighting options for darker scenes or backlit situations, with creative control over flash power settings.

The EOS R100 also offers exciting video capabilities. Users can create videos without shooting dedicated video footage, making it ideal for those who are new to videography or are exploring different creative options. The Hybrid Auto mode automatically transforms still photos and video snippets into a digest movie, summarizing the day’s activities. The 4K Timelapse Video mode captures shots at predetermined intervals and stitches them together into a high-resolution video, preserving pristine image quality and details.

For more advanced video content creation, the EOS R100 supports 4K video shooting and slow-motion movies with 120p high frame rate recording. Features like Eye Detection AF and Movie Digital IS ensure that subjects remain in focus and footage remains stable, even while shooting on the move.

The EOS R100 provides multiple ways for users to create images, catering to various skill levels and familiarity with manual controls. In addition to traditional DSLR and mirrorless camera controls, the camera offers a Creative Assist mode, allowing users to adjust settings using layman terms such as “Background blur,” “Brightness,” and “Saturation.” Scene modes and Scene Intelligent Auto are available for automatic selection of optimal settings based on the scene or desired outcome. Creative filters within the in-camera presets enable users to customize the look and finish of their images, expressing their individual style.

With a vast selection of lenses available, the EOS R100 opens up endless possibilities for imaging. It directly supports over 30 RF and RF-S lenses within Canon’s expanding RF lens lineup, offering users the flexibility to go wider, closer, reach further, or create dreamy bokeh effects. Furthermore, it can be paired with over 80 EF lenses using the EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.

The EOS R100 is set to hit the market on June 20, 2023, and will be available at authorized Canon dealers. It retails at S$729 for the body and S$889 for the body with the RF-S18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.
