Cortical Labs Closes $10M Funding Round to Revolutionize AI with Biological Intelligence Operating System (biOS)

Cortical Labs, the pioneer in synthetic biology and biological computing, has successfully raised an oversubscribed $10 million funding round, led by Horizons Ventures, with participation from Blackbird Ventures, LifeX Ventures, Radar Ventures, and In-Q-Tel. The funding will enable Cortical Labs to accelerate the commercialization of its patented Biological Intelligence Operating System (biOS) and fulfill pre-orders.

Cortical Labs is transforming the world of artificial intelligence (AI) by harnessing the power of human neurons. Unlike traditional digital AI models, Cortical Labs uses clusters of lab-cultivated neurons from human stem cells to create a “DishBrain,” which is integrated into its biOS with a mixture of hard silicon and soft tissue. This innovative approach allows for faster adaptation, learning, and growth, with far less energy consumption.

According to Hon Weng Chong, CEO and founder of Cortical Labs, “Our technology will shape and drive the next frontier of AI, and with this new round of capital, we are thrilled to keep accelerating research and development to bring the DishBrain to market this year.”

Cortical Labs’ groundbreaking technology has the potential to revolutionize several industries, including personalized medicine and disease detection, as well as cognitive testing for the life-sciences industry. The company aims to position the Cortical Labs 1 (CL1) system as the premier development and experimentation platform for researchers in non-biological fields such as artificial intelligence and engineering through the cloud deployment of its CL1 units.

In partnership with Cambridge, UK biotech company bit.bio and academic partners at the Organoid Intelligence alliance spearheaded by Johns Hopkins University, Cortical Labs is committed to advancing the possibilities of digital AI in a more powerful and sustainable way.

Cortical Labs’ innovative approach to AI is already making waves in the scientific community, with its first cohort of neurons demonstrating sentience and playing Pong in a simulated game-world. Cortical Labs’ biOS offers an untapped resource with the potential to far surpass any digital AI model for Generalized Intelligence.

With the successful funding round, Cortical Labs is well-positioned to lead the way in the future of AI and synthetic biology.
