Huawei launches Tech4City Competition to build a more sustainable, progressive Singapore

The inaugural Huawei Tech4City Competition from May to September is a Singapore-focused competition under Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative – a long-term, digital inclusion programme that uses technology, applications, and skills to empower people and organisations everywhere.

“This competition aims to encourage Singapore youth from institutes of higher learning to contribute fresh ideas to build a city that they are proud to live in,” saidMr Foo Fang Yong, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei International. “We are looking for fresh ideas that leverage digital technology to make sustainable, urban living the new way of life as we shape the future of Singapore. As a leading global ICT company that has been in Singapore for over 20 years, Huawei and our ecosystem partners will be working together with participants to help them bring their ideas and concepts to life.

Nature, Culture, and Neighbour as key themes towards Singapore’s overall accessibility

The Tech4City Competition encompasses three key themes – Nature, Culture, and Neighbour. As digitalisation and sustainability have become major driving forces for future societal development, it is paramount to leverage and combine these themes to not only reduce overall carbon emissions, but also continue to connect, integrate, and reinforce the strength of Singapore as a cultural hub. Through this competition, Huawei will provide teams with the ability to build a streamlined and inclusive digital ecosystem, increasing overall accessibility.

From May to August, participants aged between 18 and 35 years old from universities, polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education, fresh graduates, and young professionals can form teams of two to four members. Teams will work together to shape ideas, attend monthly networking sessions, and join sharing and clinic sessions, where industry experts and mentors will share their industry experience and knowledge in areas such sustainability, technology, and the public sector as well as lend support to the participants.

Submission deadline is on 31 August 2022. Thereafter, Huawei will announce the top 10 shortlisted entries in early September, where successful teams will undergo mentoring and coaching to prepare for their final pitch.

Finals of the Tech4City competition will take place at the end of September, where shortlisted teams will pitch their ideas to an advisory panel comprising of Huawei executives and industry leaders. Teams will be judged on research and insights, innovativeness, and feasibility of their solution, how their proposal demonstrates social impact on its beneficiaries and relevance and consistency between solution and execution. Bonus points will be awarded to those who leverage Huawei’s technologies.

The winning team stands to walk away with S$10,000 in cash prizes. Participants of the Tech4City competition will be offered opportunities to be fast-tracked into Huawei’s flagship CSR programme, Seeds for the Future, as well as internship opportunities with Huawei International.

Huawei’s commitment and support of Singapore’s sustainable development has seen the company partnering with Business China, National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School, NUS Enterprise, SMU College of Integrative Studies (CIS), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) over the years. Through the Tech4City competition, Huawei aims to bring digital to every person, home and organisation for a fully connected, intelligent world.
