5 Tips on how to safeguard your devices starting this National Computer Security Day or now

How COVID-19 Is Impacting Security

By: Gil Vega, Chief Information Security Officer at Veeam Software

Since computers have existed, so have those who want to exploit them. Let’s take a look at how you can secure the computers that you rely on. By computers we don’t just mean laptops and PCs; don’t forget your mobile devices, tablets, routers, smart speakers, smart TVs (maybe even your smart fridge!). Every device has the potential to be hacked or to fail – but don’t panic! There are some easy-to-follow steps you can take to protect all your devices:

  • Passwords – Change defaults and use a lock screen
  • Keep devices up to date – leverage auto updates and ensure your anti-virus is active and updated
  • Only download/install trusted apps or software – check privacy settings before installing and only buy from reputable sources
  • Use secure connections – only use networks you know are secure and consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
  • Prepare for failure – backup your important files and consider turning on device tracking to find your device if you lose it
