HUAWEI nova 3i – World’s First Front-facing Dual Cameras

HUAWEI nova 3i launch

Singapore was among the first in the world to experience the new HUAWEI nova 3i.

Our First Impression

A mid-range smartphone with powerful cameras that can give higher-end phones a run for their money.

Powerful Photography Experience

HUAWEI nova 3i is the world’s first smartphone to feature front facing dual cameras with Artificial Intelligence (AI) support.

It boasts a total of four AI cameras:

Front: 24MP and 2MP, Rear: 16MP and 2MP.

Dual cameras operate by taking two photos simultaneously – the one taken with the primary lens contains the image data while the other stores depth-of-field data.

In this case, the HUAWEI nova 3i’s front 24MP primary sensor is designed to capture details with its f/2.0 wide aperture lens, while the 2MP secondary sensor captures depth data with dedicated depth detection hardware.

Working in synergy, the dual cameras can produce stunning and authentic bokeh effects.

Its AI technology can also recognise over 200 scenarios across eight categories, including Stage Performance, Night and Plant.

It adjusts the settings accordingly, optimising photos by scene, which could involve making the sky bluer, the grass greener and even sand on the beach more granular.

There’s also a portrait mode where you can select the lighting conditions.

Selfies are also made more engaging with 3D Qmoji that transposes the face of a user onto a digital avatar.

Its video mode is impressive too even in low light conditions, including a super slow motion function. Prior to this, I thought that this function was available only in the higher-end phones.

First Feel

When I picked up the phone, I was surprised at how light and thin it was.

With four AI cameras, I thought that it would be bulkier.

While light (169g), it doesn’t feel cheap or plastic-y, thanks to its glass front and back, giving it a more substantial feel.

The 6.3 inch FullViewDisplay is large enough to enjoy your favourite movie without too much eye-strain.

Performance

The HUAWEI nova 3i features the all-new Kirin 710 and the latest EMUI 8.2.

Compared to kirin 659, Kirin 710 delivers 10 times the single core performance and 2.26 times the GPU performance. It also consumes less power.

Availability

The HUAWEI nova 3i will be available in Iris Purple and Black at the recommended retail price of $398.

It’ll be making its debut on 28 July 2018 at Waterway Point Shopping Mall, East Wing Atrium, Basement 2.
