Lenovo has named Amar Babu, its Asia Pacific President, as the new Mobile Business Group General Manager and Motorola Global President, effective 1 January 2027.

Key Takeaways
  • Amar Babu moves from Lenovo Asia Pacific President to Motorola Global President, effective 1 January 2027.
  • Under Babu, Asia Pacific kept Lenovo’s number one PC position while Motorola grew to nearly 9% market share in India and became the second-largest smartphone brand in Japan.
  • He will report to Luca Rossi, who stays on as acting Motorola Global President through the end of 2026 while Babu completes the handover.

Five years that reshaped Asia Pacific

Babu currently serves as Lenovo Senior Vice President and President of Asia Pacific, a role he has held for more than five years. Under his leadership, Lenovo says AP became a more balanced and diversified business and a key growth engine for the group. The region kept its number one PC position throughout, while Motorola grew to nearly 9% market share in India and became the second-largest smartphone brand in Japan. Lenovo’s infrastructure business in the region turned profitable with market share nearing double digits, and its Solutions & Services arm pushed the share of revenue from advanced services past 50%.

In his new role, Babu will lead Motorola as it expands its devices and experiences for consumers and enterprises worldwide. Lenovo frames the move as part of its broader personal AI strategy, with Babu expected to build on Motorola’s brand, accelerate growth in its premium segment, and strengthen its position in markets including the US, India and Japan.

A career built inside Lenovo

Babu has been at Lenovo since 2007, moving through leadership roles spanning business management, operations, services and market leadership before taking the Asia Pacific presidency. Before joining Lenovo, he held management, operational and technical roles at Intel, HCL and Citibank.

“Amar is a strong leader and has driven consistent results. I’m confident that he will bring his deep experience in sales, operations, partner and customer relationships, and business management to continue driving Motorola’s success globally. As we move forward, our focus remains clear: continue to elevate Motorola’s premium portfolio, create meaningful consumer experiences across devices, and bring technology to life in ways that are both intelligent and deeply human,” said Luca Rossi, Lenovo EVP and Intelligent Devices Group President.

A handover that takes a few months

Babu will report to Rossi, global head of Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices business group. Rossi will keep serving as acting Motorola Global President through the end of the calendar year, working alongside Babu on the transition. In the short term, Babu will continue as Asia Pacific President while taking on the new responsibilities.
