Sony has introduced the MDR-3R, a USB-C-compatible version of the wired headphones first launched alongside the original Walkman in 1979, together with a special edition tied to Netflix‘s Stranger Things.

Key Takeaways
  • The MDR-3R updates the original 1979 MDR-3 headphones with USB-C connectivity, a built-in mic and an in-line remote.
  • It uses the same 23mm driver units as the original MDR-3 for a close match to the original sound.
  • Pre-orders open now, with a December 2026 Singapore launch at S$89 (S$129 for the Stranger Things Edition).

A faithful recreation of the original design

The MDR-3 launched alongside the original Walkman TPS-L2 in 1979 and helped popularise listening to music freely on the go. Sony says the MDR-3R carries over that design, including the iconic blue and orange ear pads and the lightweight, open-ear build, while updating it for modern use.

USB-C connectivity, no pairing needed

With USB-C support, the MDR-3R connects directly to compatible smartphones and other devices with no charging, pairing or updates required. It adds a microphone for calls and an in-line remote, features the original MDR-3 did not have.

Sony says the headphones use the same 23mm driver units as the original MDR-3, reproducing sound close to the original while making subtle refinements for modern listening preferences.

A Stranger Things edition for the Walkman generation

Sony is pairing the launch with an MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition, inspired by the show’s 1980s setting and character Max’s headphone style, featuring an engraved Stranger Things logo and custom packaging.

Sony says roughly 25 percent of the plastic used in the product is recycled, and the packaging is plastic-free.

Pricing and availability

Pre-orders for the MDR-3R and MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition has begun, exclusively through Sony Store and Sony Store Online. Both models launch in Singapore from December 2026, priced at S$89 and S$129 respectively.
