Sony has launched the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System for its VENICE 2 CineAlta camera, expanding the camera to the 65mm format with a sensor the company says is among the largest used in commercially available cinema cameras.
Key Takeaways
- The RIALTO 65 sensor measures 53.75mm by 35.83mm, giving an imaging area about 2.2 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor, which Sony says helps render depth and subject presence even in wide shots.
- The camera head weighs about 1.5kg and can separate from the VENICE 2 body for Extension Mode shooting in confined spaces, supporting cable lengths of 4.5m or 12m.
- The RIALTO 65, along with its ND filter kit and 12m cable, will be available in Singapore in the first half of 2027.
A 65mm sensor built for presence and depth
The Sony RIALTO 65 carries a sensor measuring 53.75mm by 35.83mm, with a diagonal of about 64.60mm — an imaging area roughly 2.2 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor. Sony says this helps the camera render a stronger sense of distance and spatial depth between subject and background, even across a wide field of view. The system supports 9.6K readout at a 1.5:1 aspect ratio, and users can select a base ISO of 2500 or 10000, with more than 15 stops of latitude at the lower setting.
Compact enough for confined spaces
Despite the larger format, the RIALTO 65 camera head is compact and lightweight at around 115mm x 154mm x 63mm and roughly 1.5kg. It supports Extension Mode, in which the head separates from the VENICE 2 body on a 4.5m or 12m cable, letting it be placed in confined spaces or at elevated positions, as well as Studio Mode, where the head attaches directly to the body. Because the VENICE 2 body still handles recording, users keep their existing AXS memory cards, colour science and production workflows.
Availability
The RIALTO 65, along with its optional ND filter kit and 12m cable, will be available in Singapore from the first half of 2027. Pricing will be confirmed through Sony’s authorised retailers closer to launch.
