Digital Realty has started building KIX15, a 24-megawatt (MW) data centre in Osaka that it says is aimed at AI and cloud workloads in Japan.

The facility will be the fifth data centre at the company’s KIX Campus in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, and is scheduled to begin operating in the fourth quarter of 2028. It is being developed by MC Digital Realty, Digital Realty’s 50/50 joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation.

Osaka data centre adds 24MW of capacity

Once KIX15 is complete, MC Digital Realty’s Japan portfolio will stand at 10 data centres with about 220MW of total IT capacity. It follows the opening of NRT14 in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, earlier this year.

KIX15 is designed for hybrid air and liquid cooling. Digital Realty expects customers to include hyperscalers, cloud service providers and companies deploying AI infrastructure, who will connect through its ServiceFabric platform to more than 300 of its data centres worldwide.

Building out Kansai’s AI infrastructure

The site is part of MC Digital Realty’s Kansai AI Infrastructure Co-Creation Project, which combines campus expansion with stronger domestic and international connectivity and work with telecommunications and technology partners.

“Kansai has a growing opportunity to play a larger role in Japan’s AI economy,” said Kohei Yamashita, Representative Director and Chief Executive Officer of MC Digital Realty.

Serene Nah, Managing Director and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, called Japan a strategic market and a key part of the company’s long-term growth in the region. The company said demand in Japan is rising for higher-density computing, advanced cooling and reliable connectivity as generative AI and cloud adoption grow.
