Tata Communications Boosts Subsea Capacity Linking India, Singapore

Tata Communications has announced strategic investments in subsea cable infrastructure to strengthen connectivity between the emerging AI hubs of Mumbai and Chennai in India and Singapore, addressing growing bandwidth and AI-driven data demands across Asia.

The company is enhancing its Tata Global Network (TGN) by integrating a new subsea cable system between Mumbai and Singapore, and investing as a consortium member in a separate system connecting Chennai to Singapore, with that route expected to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2029.

A critical digital corridor for AI and cloud traffic

Tata Communications frames the India-Singapore subsea route as set to become one of the world’s most critical digital corridors, providing a high-capacity, low-latency pathway underpinning enterprise, cloud and hyperscaler traffic between India, Southeast Asia and global markets. The added capacity on TGN is intended to give customers more diverse, agile and high-performance connectivity options as data centre demand grows.

Linking into India’s terrestrial fibre network

The new cable systems will connect with Tata Communications’ India terrestrial fibre network, extending onward connectivity to more than 100 data centres nationwide. Combined with the broader TGN subsea network, this is expected to strengthen the company’s IZO connectivity solutions, including IZO DC Dynamic Connectivity and IZO Multi-Cloud Connectivity, which offer self-healing and self-provisioning capabilities across data centre and cloud ecosystems.

Part of a wider subsea expansion

Tata Communications operates what it describes as the largest wholly-owned subsea fibre network in the industry, spanning more than 500,000km of subsea optical fibre and over 200,000km of terrestrial fibre. The latest investments follow the 2025 integration of the TGN IA2 (Tata Global Network – Intra-Asia 2) submarine cable, which the company says improved latency and redundancy by interconnecting with the existing TGN IA system.
