Instagram Rolls Out 13+ Content Settings for Singapore Teens

11 years of Instagram: 5 common scams and tips to stay safe from them

Instagram has expanded its Teen Accounts feature in Singapore, introducing a new default content setting modelled on movie ratings criteria for ages 13 and above, along with a stricter optional mode for parents who want additional controls.

What changes for teen users

Teens under 18 will automatically be placed into the updated 13+ content setting, which governs what they see across Feed, Reels, Explore, Stories, Search, comments, direct messages, and AI experiences. The content threshold is designed to mirror what might appear in a film rated appropriate for viewers aged 13 and above. Teens cannot opt out of this setting without parental permission.

Beyond existing restrictions on sexually suggestive content, graphic imagery, and content related to alcohol or tobacco, the updated policies will reduce teen exposure to strong language, certain risky stunts, and content that may encourage harmful behaviour. Teens will also be prevented from following accounts that regularly post age-inappropriate content, and those accounts will be blocked from following teens, messaging them, or commenting on their posts. A wider range of mature search terms will return no results for teen users.

New Limited Content option for parents

For parents who want stricter controls, Instagram is introducing a setting called Limited Content. This filters additional material from the teen’s experience and removes the ability for teens to see, leave, or receive comments on posts. The feature sits alongside existing parental supervision tools in Teen Accounts.

AI experiences within Teen Accounts have also been updated to ensure responses align with the 13+ standard. Meta says protections have been extended across content recommendations, comments, Stories, and direct messages, covering material shared even by accounts a teen already follows.

Rollout timeline

The updated content settings began rolling out gradually to Teen Accounts in Singapore from 29 April 2026 and are expected to be fully available in the coming months. Teen Accounts were first introduced by Meta as a dedicated experience for under-18 users on Instagram, with built-in restrictions and parental oversight tools that apply automatically without requiring setup.
