Singtel has introduced RCS messaging support for iPhone users in Singapore, enabling richer cross-platform messaging between iOS and Android devices.
From Thursday (Feb 27), Singtel customers running iOS 26.3 will automatically gain access to Rich Communication Services (RCS) features when messaging RCS-enabled Android users. The move upgrades traditional SMS and MMS to a data-based messaging standard.
What RCS Messaging Means for iPhone Users
With RCS messaging support for iPhone users, customers can send high-resolution photos and videos, view typing indicators, react with emojis and participate in enhanced group chats. Messages are delivered over Wi-Fi or mobile data, including while roaming internationally.
Singtel said RCS is enabled by default once the device is updated. Users can verify activation under Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging.
Mr Vivek Mehendiratta, Chief Customer Officer, Consumer, Singtel Singapore, said the rollout enables “a unified, cross-platform messaging experience across the two largest mobile operating systems, making everyday communication even more frictionless”.
RCS messaging operates within the native Messages app and does not require users to download third-party messaging platforms.
RCS for Business Extends to iPhone
The launch also expands Singtel’s RCS for Business offering to iPhone users. Singtel first introduced RCS for Business for Android users in January 2024.
With RCS for Business on iPhone, companies can send verified brand messages featuring official logos, business information and rich media content. Interactive quick-reply buttons allow customers to complete actions such as bookings, enquiries and payments within the chat interface.
Singtel said built-in verification, delivery and read receipts, and analytics tools aim to improve security, engagement and personalisation for enterprises communicating at scale.
Shift Beyond SMS
RCS has been positioned by mobile operators globally as a successor to SMS and MMS, offering app-like functionality within default messaging platforms. The expansion to iPhone users broadens cross-platform compatibility, particularly between Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android ecosystems.
For Singapore’s mobile market, the move allows Singtel to offer feature-rich messaging without relying on external apps, while giving businesses another digital engagement channel.
