OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health With Medical Record Integration

OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated health-focused experience that allows users to securely connect medical records and wellness apps to ChatGPT, as the company expands the platform’s role in personal health and wellness support.

ChatGPT Health is designed to help users better understand their health information, prepare for medical appointments and track long-term patterns, while stopping short of providing diagnoses or treatment. OpenAI said the feature is intended to support, not replace, professional medical care.

Health and wellness is already one of the most common uses of ChatGPT. OpenAI said that, based on de-identified data, more than 230 million people worldwide ask health-related questions on the platform each week. ChatGPT Health builds on this behaviour by grounding responses in users’ own health data, rather than relying solely on general information.

Medical records and app integrations

With ChatGPT Health, users can securely connect medical records and wellness apps so that conversations reflect their personal context. Supported integrations include Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and other fitness, nutrition and activity tools.

Once connected, users can ask questions such as summarising recent lab results, reviewing trends in cholesterol levels, preparing questions for an upcoming doctor’s visit, or adjusting diet and exercise plans. Some medical record integrations and apps are currently available only in the United States, and Apple Health integration requires iOS.

OpenAI said users must give explicit permission before any app can access health data, and access can be revoked at any time through settings.

Privacy and security at the core

OpenAI has positioned privacy as a central feature of ChatGPT Health. Health conversations are stored in a separate, dedicated space within ChatGPT, with additional encryption and isolation measures layered on top of the platform’s existing security architecture.

According to the company, conversations within ChatGPT Health are not used to train its foundation models. Health data and memories remain contained within the Health space and do not flow into users’ general ChatGPT conversations, although limited non-health context, such as lifestyle changes, may be referenced to improve relevance.

“Your health information is deeply personal, which is why Health is built with enhanced protections and clear user controls,” OpenAI said in its announcement.

Built with physicians

ChatGPT Health was developed in collaboration with more than 260 physicians across 60 countries and dozens of medical specialties. OpenAI said these clinicians have provided feedback on model outputs more than 600,000 times over the past two years.

This work informed HealthBench, an evaluation framework created with practising physicians to assess responses against clinical standards such as safety, clarity and appropriate escalation of care, rather than exam-style accuracy alone.

The company said this approach helps ensure the system performs well in practical scenarios, such as explaining test results in plain language or helping users prepare questions for their doctors.

Availability and what’s next

Access to ChatGPT Health is initially limited to a small group of users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. OpenAI said it plans to expand access to all users on web and iOS in the coming weeks.

As the service evolves, the company said it will add more integrations and insights to help users feel “more informed, prepared and confident” when navigating healthcare.
