Samsung Launches P9 Express microSD for Next-Gen Gaming

Samsung Electronics has launched the Samsung P9 Express, a new microSD Express card lineup designed to deliver faster storage performance for next-generation gaming consoles including the Nintendo Switch 2. The microSD Express range goes on sale in Singapore from 17 November 2025.

Built on the PCI Express (PCIe) interface and Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) protocol, the microSD Express standard offers significantly higher data-transfer speeds than conventional Ultra-High Speed I (UHS-I) cards. Samsung said the P9 Express targets users who need high-capacity storage and rapid data access for gaming, content creation and professional workloads.

Faster performance for gamers

The Samsung P9 Express is available in 256GB and 512GB options. Samsung is positioning the microSD Express card as a storage upgrade for dedicated console gamers, especially those who install multiple titles or purchase large downloadable content (DLC) packages. The company said the cards also support households where several users share a single console, reducing pressure on limited internal storage.

When paired with a device that supports the SD Express interface, the P9 Express can achieve maximum sequential read speeds of up to 800MB/s—about four times faster than UHS-I cards, according to Samsung. The company said the speed boost enables smoother loading times during gameplay and faster transfers when moving files to PCs, laptops or workstations.

Samsung added that professional creators working with high-resolution media could benefit from the faster throughput when editing, rendering or managing large files.

Thermal management and durability

The P9 Express incorporates Host Memory Buffer (HMB) support and Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology, originally developed for the company’s SSD portfolio. HMB uses the host device’s system memory to accelerate data access, while DTG automatically regulates card temperature to prevent overheating and performance throttling during extended gaming sessions.

The microSD Express cards also feature six-proof durability—resistance to water immersion, extreme temperatures, X-ray exposure, accidental drops, dust and pressure. Samsung said these protections are intended to safeguard game saves and large media files across long-term use.

The launch comes amid rising interest in microSD Express technology, which aims to bridge the gap between portable storage and SSD-class performance. Major console and handheld gaming platforms have increasingly relied on expandable storage as game sizes grow, while creators are seeking faster removable media for video and imaging workflows across Asia.

The Samsung P9 Express microSD Express cards will be available through Samsung.com and authorised retailers in Singapore starting 17 November 2025. The 256GB model carries a recommended price of S$89, while the 512GB version is priced at S$171. Samsung has not announced regional release dates outside Singapore.
