WhatsApp Launches Full Apple Watch App with Messaging and Calls

WhatsApp has launched a major update for Apple Watch users, introducing a new standalone app that allows people to read, reply, and react to messages directly from their wrist — without needing to take out their iPhone.

The new WhatsApp for Apple Watch app supports several highly requested features, including voice messages, call notifications, emoji reactions, and the ability to view full chat history. The rollout begins globally this week and requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or newer.

More Features, Less Phone Time

For the first time, users can read full WhatsApp messages on their Apple Watch, including long texts and media such as images and stickers. The update also adds the option to record and send voice messages, making quick communication possible even while on the move.

Incoming WhatsApp calls now appear on the watch display, letting users see who’s calling and decide whether to pick up without checking their phone.

The app also supports quick emoji reactions, allowing users to respond to friends’ messages with a tap.

Improved Media and Privacy

WhatsApp said the new Apple Watch experience provides “clear images and stickers” for a more complete messaging experience on the smaller screen. Users can also browse more of their recent chat history when scrolling through conversations.

As with all WhatsApp communications, end-to-end encryption remains enabled, ensuring that messages and calls stay private.

Meta, which owns WhatsApp, said this update represents “just the start” of efforts to improve the smartwatch experience, with more features planned in future updates.

Expanding the WhatsApp Ecosystem

The Apple Watch update is part of WhatsApp’s broader push to make its messaging service more device-independent, following earlier launches of multi-device syncing and desktop support. The move also places WhatsApp closer in feature parity with Apple’s own Messages app, which has long offered full smartwatch functionality.

The app is expected to appeal to users who rely on their Apple Watch for quick, discreet communication during workouts, commutes, or meetings.
