2024 End of Year Edition: A Tech Writer’s Everyday Carry

Advertisements

You’ve probably seen those tech reviewer videos showcasing their everyday carry items. These videos often give me anxiety because I carry far fewer things when I’m on the move.

Sure, these reviewers might actually carry all that tech, but they likely don’t use everything. My everyday carry is straightforward – here’s everything I use, minus my ride (since technically, it carries me).

Apple iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 16 Pro is a solid upgrade from my iPhone 12 Pro Max, with notably improved camera quality and battery life. I’m still waiting for Apple Intelligence to fully launch in Singapore, which makes me wonder if I should have opted for a Samsung Galaxy S24 instead. The eternal tech dilemmas, right?

Apple Watch Ultra – First Gen

I’m still using the Apple Watch Ultra because it works well – most of the time. Occasionally, the screen blacks out while still running, particularly during my long runs and marathons. Despite these quirks, it serves me well, especially for tracking my LumiHealth points, which I can redeem for vouchers.

Garmin Forerunner 265

My journey with Garmin started 12 years ago when a friend showed me his Forerunner 245 during Army reservist training. I loved it, but it was beyond my budget then. Even a decade later, with my Apple Watch Ultra, I struggled to justify buying one.

After proving myself as a dedicated runner over the past year, I finally had a good reason to get a running-specific watch. I snagged the Garmin Forerunner 265 with a discount, thanks to an influencer who kindly secured a promo code from Garmin for me.

The Forerunner 265’s battery life puts my Apple Watch Ultra to shame – lasting about 13 days (less with frequent GPS use). Its built-in features are perfect for runners, and I use them extensively in my training. Plus, it’s incredibly lightweight, making it more comfortable than the Ultra.

Kobo Libra Colour

I usually rely on Blinkist, YouTube, Podcast, and Masterclass for learning, which is why I gave my Amazon Paperwhite to my brother last year. But when the Kobo Libra Colour launched, its appeal was irresistible – I had to get it when it reached Singapore.

Its Overdrive integration is fantastic. Since Singapore’s National Library partners with Overdrive, I can read most books I want for free. New releases take time to appear, but that’s fine unless I’m really eager to read something.

Apple MagSafe Wallet

I’ve tried two MagSafe wallets: Apple’s version and a multi-functional one from Moft. Though I started with the Moft, its leather quality disappointed me, peeling off quickly. I switched to Apple’s MagSafe Wallet, which has a helpful feature that notifies you when it’s detached and can be tracked through the FindMy app.

There you have it, my everyday carry – an iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch Ultra, Garmin Forerunner 265, Kobo Libra Colour and Apple MagSafe Wallet. If you’re interested in hearing more about any of these items, drop a comment below or send me an email, and I’ll get back to you.
